There is a multitude of scripture which confirms that God looks at the heart and makes His decisions on what He sees in the heart of man. I think the scripture that sums it up in a concise and succint manner is found in Jeremiah 17:10 (Amplified Bible)

"I the Lord search the mind, I try the heart, even to give to every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings."

Another oft quoted scripture is 1 Samuel 16:7 (Amplified Bible) when God gave the Prophet Samuel the task of annointing David as Israels King to replace King Saul.

"But the Lord said to Samuel, Look not on his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart."

This is a good question. I have got into the habit of praying out loud because I was wondering if God could "hear" my "thought" prayers, which I know is probably silly. I figure since he created me, he would create me in such a way to be able to hear my thoughts, but at the same time nothing in the New Testament really confirms that God hears silent prayer.

Strange... I know Satan can't hear my thoughts so I used to pray silently so he couldn't mess with them (chances of him being near me are extremely slim I know because he isn't omnipresent, but nonetheless...), but after a while I couldn't find any scripture to backup my silent prayer theology. I still don't feel 100% confident that we are not supposed to pray out loud... Not that God doesn't hear them, but scripture seems to indicate to me that prayers were out loud.

I believe GOD can hear prayers any which way. He is Wisdom, all powerful Creator. How could our Creator not hear our thoughts when He created the idea of thinking? GOD is awesome and for sure can hear prayers whether out loud, silent, online, written or crying in emotional distress.

Jeremiah 17:10 (New King James Version)

I, the LORD, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings.

That shows He for sure can hear thoughts.

Hope that helps

Here's a few more scriptures.
1Samuel 16:7
But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

1Kings 8:39
then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)

Psalms 44:21
*Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

Proverbs 21:2
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts.

Luke 16:15
*And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

Acts 15:8&9
8*And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; 9*and put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

Man this is turning into a good thread... thanks fellas! I think my next word study will be on the word "heart" to see if I can really get some meaning out of it. I hope I am granted some time to buckle down and bible study, but finals are indeed murderous this semester.

hi again - one quick question, " according to the fruit of his doings" what does this mean, does it mean God will look at your heart and mind but if your actions are bad then thats what matters the most or does the verse mean the Lord will search the mind and heart to see why you did certain things and if your heart was in the right place then this is the most important thing. I belive its the latter but wonder what all your views are?

Thanks

I am glad that this knowledge is restricted to God alone. Some of our brothers and sisters in Jesus, need to hear that. Many have believed that the devil knows their thoughts, and their intensions, which is completely untrue. Such information is beyond the devil's reach.

Jesus knows our thoughts and intentions. I am very pleased about that. I can talk to him all the time without giving apology or explanation, and ask His advice and help. Because He knows me.....and you, better than we know oueselves.

Very good points there. That will put a lot of minds at ease im sure. Any view on my previous post?

Hi Everyone

Just a quick question. I was talking to a freind last night, and he asked does God search the hearts of every man of just christians? Good question I thought - and i dont know the answer! I would have thought every man but not sure. any help would be greatly appreicated. I know the above verse says every man but some translations of the Bible dont say every man. I am I correct in thinking that the verse means Jesus searches the hearts or does the Lord part mean God? I think it means God because its from The Old Testament

What are you refering to here brother?

Hi Stephen

Thanks for replying, what Im getting at is that the Verse from Jerimiah says God looks at the heart, is this christian hearts only or is it general. I know thw verse says every man but some translations just say man. For instance my Dad isnt Born Again - Would God look at his heart in regards to his actions?

Thanks again

God Bless

God knows everything, literally. He knows the hearts of every man, believer or non-believer.

Matthew 10:30
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

The above was not necessarily about GOD knowing all things, but in the point that GOD makes in that verse it shows that GOD does indeed know all things about each individual. Hair on the head all numbered is basically metaphorical to GOD knowing all things.

This should top it off:

Jeremiah 1:5
“ Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

Here are some verses I know:

And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever. (1 Chronicles 28:9)

Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me. (Job 21:27)

And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and said unto me, Speak; Thus saith the LORD; Thus have ye said, O house of Israel: for I know the things that come into your mind, every one of them. (Ezekiel 11:5)

David,

In Psalms 139:1, David says, "Oh Lord, You have searched me and known me." God has a perfect knowledge of man. When I say something that is taken wrong, or perhaps hurt someone's feelings, I remind myself of this verse. I spent about 40 years in a job where I knew my partner had my back and he knew I would give my life for his.

Greetings,

Some really good and helpful answers here. So refreshing to see!
I have to say that even though the Scriptures given in this thread are not new to me, reading them here in this thread again is both sobering and encouraging.

May I encourage you to read and re-read this thread with its honest asking questions and kind, to the point, no judging, no superiority attitude and no baiting ... helpful Scriptural replies.

It's a valid couple of questions that perhaps everyone has had or still has and there will be those who haven't yet asked.

If you can think of any more verses and passages of Scripture, post away!

Bless you ....><>
