Gluttony---eating to much is a sin

Gluttony is having a craving for food that conquers you.

The text of Scripture that holds out the challenge to me on this issue is 1 Corinthians 6:12 where Paul says—specifically in regard to food and drink—that he will not be enslaved by anything. He is saying, "I have one master, Jesus Christ, and I don't want any other master." Then in 9:27 he talks about pummeling his body: "I pummel my body lest I be disqualified."

I think we need to recover a large appreciation for the biblical disciplines of self-denial and fasting. That is the discipline side of this issue: "I will not be enslaved by anything," "I pommel myself," and "I take up my cross daily." I think we should esteem, extol, and cherish the biblical teaching that the Christian life is one of confronting our cravings and saying no to them.

But easier said than done, right?

So how do you fight the battle? I think it must be fought mainly not with the word "No" but with an alternative "Yes."

Gluttony seems to be a sin that Christians like to ignore. We are often quick to label smoking and drinking as sins, but for some reason gluttony is accepted or at least tolerated. Many of the arguments used against smoking and drinking, such as health and addiction, apply equally to overeating. Many believers would not even consider having a glass of wine or smoking a cigarette but have no qualms about gorging themselves at the dinner table. This should not be!

Proverbs 23:20-21 warns us, “Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.” Proverbs 28:7 declares, “He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.” Proverbs 23:2 proclaims, “Put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.”

Physical appetites are an analogy of our ability to control ourselves. If we are unable to control our eating habits, we are probably also unable to control other habits, such as those of the mind (lust, covetousness, anger) and unable to keep our mouths from gossip or strife. We are not to let our appetites control us, but we are to have control over our appetites. (See Deuteronomy 21:20, Proverbs 23:2, 2 Peter 1:5-7, 2 Timothy 3:1-9, and 2 Corinthians 10:5.) The ability to say “no” to anything in excess—self-control—is one of the fruits of the Spirit common to all believers (Galatians 5:22).

God has blessed us by filling the earth with foods that are delicious, nutritious, and pleasurable. We should honor God's creation by enjoying these foods and by eating them in appropriate quantities. God calls us to control our appetites, rather than allowing them to control us.

Is gluttony a sin? What does the Bible say about overeating?

I'm overweight because of the medication I take and don't tell me to go on a diet because I tried them all. every time I try to eat less my head start hurting because of the meds. I got off my meds 3 times for bible reason and ended up in the hospital 3 times. My mind isn't what it use to be when I younger. This life isn't easy.

Hi GA, I've read your posts lil sis and my heart goes out to you. I wish, I hope, I pray your family, your friends, your church, everything, would get so much better. I know how it feels when you think everything, everyone is totally ambivalent towards you. Just know and appreciate that God absolutely adores you, to Him you are very very special and priceless.

Please please don't get hung up about your weight and whatever you do, do not stop taking your meds. God wants you thinking straight, loving Him, praising Him, adoring Him. You can't do that when your head's bouncing off the walls, that's not what God wants for you, He wants you happy and thinking straight.

Does your weight matter? Well yeah it does but smaller portions, be careful what you eat and plenty of gentle exercise will soon sort that out.

God bless you sweet sister.

Love Andy
