In Hebrews 3-4 we are instructed in the ways of the Lord and in what it looks like to be people of genuine faith in the Lord Jesus and in what it looks like if our faith is not of God, but is of human flesh. And we are warned against hardening our hearts against the Lord and against His commands, as did the majority of the Israelites when they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, and so the majority of them were put to death. They did not enter into God’s eternal rest because of their disobedience (their unbelief).
And we have a parallel passage of Scripture in 1 Corinthians 10:1-22 where we learn that those things took place as examples to us to keep us from craving evil things as they did. We are not to be idolaters, drunkards, revelers, the sexually immoral, and those who put Christ to the test and who gripe and complain about God and about His commands. For those who did those things were killed. And these things happened as examples to us and were written down as warnings to us so we do not follow their example.

“12For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”
The Double-Minded
God knows us inside out. He knows our every thought, our every desire, and all of what we do. Nothing is hidden from God! Yet there are people who are living in addiction to sin who hide what they do from other people, but they cannot hide from God. They hide because what they are doing is evil and it is against God, and it is against other humans. Those who live like this, who make sin their practice, and not obedience to God, can be very conniving and manipulative people whose intention truly is to hurt other people.
Many of them are addicted to sexual immorality, but that is not their only sin. Many of them are also those who are habitually hating others, lying, deceiving, manipulating, tricking, gaslighting, and the like, which goes right along with addiction to sexual immorality. And so they also play mind games, and they feign ignorance, like they don’t know how to change, or that they are hearing something for the first time when they have heard it hundreds of times. And they keep repeating the same excuses over again.
People like this don’t usually take personal responsibility for their actions, and they will sometimes blame the ones they are habitually sinning against. So they might attempt to guilt-trip the one they are targeting to try to get the other person to believe it is their fault, when it is not their fault. And they will heap all sorts of abuse on the one they are targeting or the one who is trying to rescue them from their addiction. For they are the double-minded who teeter-totter back and forth, who are unstable in all their ways.
Some of them are like “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” one person with two separate personalities, one of which is kind, good, and respectable, and the other, which is cruel and hateful and full of trickery. It is all like an evil game they play. Many of them are abusers, but abuse isn’t just physical or only physical, or it doesn’t have to be physical at all. Abuse can be mainly verbal, and so they abuse others (or perhaps just their spouses) mentally and emotionally, and they can get hateful if their spouses do not take the bait.
And many of these sex addicts will play the victim when they are really the perpetrators for they try to get people to sympathize with them and to be on their side. And some of them will perform religiously for an audience and they may be greatly admired by people for character traits which they fake and which are not true to who they are in real life. And most people who know them will have no clue who they are with their spouses at home. For they are chameleons who know how to blend in with their environment.
The Double-Edged Sword
However, God sees all and He knows all. Nothing is hidden from God! So, whether you are the double-minded described above, thinking you are getting away with your tricks and with your lies, or you are the object of the addict’s hurtful behaviors, please know that nothing escapes God’s notice. And there isn’t anything that God does not have authority over and that He cannot step inside of and put a stop to anytime He is ready to act. But He allows us who follow Him to suffer unjustly for the sake of righteousness. And suffering is for our good to draw us closer in fellowship with our Lord.
If you are the double-minded, thinking you are getting away with your evil schemes, please know that God will judge you one day, and hell will be your eternal destiny, not heaven, even if you profess faith in Jesus Christ with your lips. What you are doing God can see it all! But if you are the one being targeted and sinned against and mistreated and lied to, give it over to the Lord, pray for wisdom in knowing what He would have you to do, and how you should respond. Don’t let Satan get the best of you! Don’t let the devil’s evil schemes against you defeat you! Follow the Lord’s leading.

To the angels of all the churches write:
These are the words of your Lord and your God.
I know all your deeds, and your witness, too,
And who holds to My words and tells what’s true.
I know all your hard work and your perseverance,
Yet I hold against you: you’ve forsaken Me.
Listen to what I say to you.
You have people there who deny My name,
And who put the cross of Christ up to shame.
They entice the people to Me, profane,
And their worship of Me is all in vain.
They are so adult’rous as they chase their idols,
And you put up with them easily enough.
Listen to what I say to you.
You give off an image of godliness,
But what you present is so fraudulent,
Or else you lack passion for Jesus Christ,
So you look to others to tell what’s right.
I say turn from your sin, or you will face judgment.
He who overcomes will have eternal life.
Listen to what I say to you.
I know your afflictions and poverty;
How you suffer for your Lord patiently.
Do not fear the devil and company.
You be faithful to your Lord endlessly.
I know all your weakness and your dedication.
You have kept My Word and not denied your Lord.
I will write on you My new name.
