1Cor 12:7; But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

1Cor 14:4; One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself

NOW - Explain to us WHY being personally edified through speaking in a tongue IS A BAD THING.

EXCUSE ME gentle persons,

we have a new Member here who has asked a question or two.

Enough clanging symbols, please.
Can we show a little respect and care. Surely that is why we are here?

Bless you all, @IlyaRev included ....><>

No one has said it was a bad thing! It seems we have a language problem here, a lack of communication. But many of us in Light of Holy Scripture think that the Bible should be obeyed. Just like the law of the land: if the speed limited is 35 and the minimal is 25 mph. if you do 40 or 20 mph, you have broken the law and out of order and that becomes a bad thing.

The Bible has stated let things in the church be done "decently and in order". So many christians in the church "Loves to Cherry pick" the Bible.

American Standard Version
For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
4He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself;
11If then I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a BARBARIAN unto me!
Apostle Paul Said:

19howbeit in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

"Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: but prophesying is for a sign , not to the unbelieving, but to them that believe."

Did Not The Bible say this:
If therefore the whole church be assembled together and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad? This is common sense.

We are not saying you cannot speak in "Gibberish" but do it at home! Because if you do it in front of me, I am going think you are mad, a Barbarian, and speaking in a unknown language sounding just like the chats I have heard from other cult religions. For i am leery already, people picking up snakes, and humming, drinking cool-aid, laying down on the floor under sheets, dancing , hoping up and down shaking. chatting, falling down on the floor slain in the spirit! Pastors slapping women across the face, hitting them in the stomach in the name of Jesus. Throwing money in the air on the floor! And i am going to stay right where I am at, in my Theological thought Patterns! "Reformed" Theology Proper,

"Get wisdom, get understanding; Forget not, neither decline from the words of my mouth;
Forsake her not, and she will preserve thee; Love her, and she will keep thee.
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom; Yea, with all thy getting get understanding.
Exalt her, and she will promote thee; She will bring thee to honor, when thou dost embrace her."

Gibberish: The Language. In addition to nonsense words, phrases and sentences, there is also a language called Gibberish. The language is similar to Pig Latin and is used by people who want to play games with a secret language. To speak the language, you break each word down into its syllables.

Description

Gibberish, also called jibber-jabber or gobbledygook, is speech that is nonsense. It may include speech sounds that are not actual words, or language games and specialized jargon that seems nonsensical to outsiders. Wikipedia

This is not a insult, it is the truth.
Shalom.
The word "Tongue" is actually the word "Language". The word "Tongues" is actualluy the word "Languages". How is that so hard to understand.

Born (natural birth) into Pentecostalism 1946 . Dad and Granddad both Pentecostal pastors. Pentecostal on Mom's side also.. Over the years i have heard the gibberish i have heard the real yet i have never seen the 'cloves of fire" dancing on any ones head. I do not believe one ,must, speak in tongues to be filled of the Holy Spirit.
1Co_14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
1Co_13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away
.
One of the above verses is not more Scripture then the other.

We human parents love our kids yet what we may say to one is not the exact thing we say to the other. Some kids need hard rules some do better more relaxed. Some can handle money some not. Given an inch some will take a mile To me God's Holy Word is written to all of His kids . Some folks look for ways to challenge ones understanding of Scripture . I will ask why the challenge what is the intent of the question is it to teach another is it to claim "I am right" Does the intent edify, or work at being an accuser?
