Is speaking in tongues necessary to be saved?

As a minister I run into this situation a ton, or situations that relate to it
To answer the question directly, NO...you do not 'have to' speak in tongues to be saved.
BUT,
it SURE DOES HELP in your Christian walk!

1) So, to get through the "are tongues even for today" premise, I propose the following link :

The link goes into quite some detail but the 'bottom line' is that those in the study 'can't understand how anybody does it' (talks in tongues..) because 'the sound that comes out of their mouth' DOES NOT come from the part of the brain where speech originates

Last, I realize that 'tongues' is a 'hot topic' in Christianity but as a minister I feel I "MUST" use every rooftop ["platform"] and proclaim the stuff I feel the Lord has taught me, to help folks [you know... the 'job' of a minister..to "help folks" ]

I don't know where you stand whoever is reading this post on "where we are in God's timetable' BUT..I think all would agree that the 'world stage' is SURE getting ramped up for some big things coming...

There is a big time spiritual war going on all around us and more and more of Gods people will simply need the "power" Jesus spoke of..in order to 'finish their own individual races the Lord has given to each of us..'

I was coming out of a shopping mall into the street when I stopped to read a testimony on display.
This was about a woman who had been a hippie and had drug addictions to heroin and marijuana and also suffered hepatitis C from sharing syringes.
She testified that she had been baptized in water by full immersion and baptized in the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues.
Then she was set free from all her addictions and healed from hepatitis C.

I was in a similar place in my life. An ex-hippie junkie addict and a petty criminal. A failure as a man in many ways and doing a lot of evil.
But I knew after being witnessed to by a man with a Bible that I was at a crossroads in my life.
I could go on and keep on failing or I could let Jesus give me a new road to travel on.

Eventually I ended up in a large bathtub of water and confessed my faith in Jesus as my Lord and Saviour.
I felt better but not much changed for me. And the enemy was working overtime to keep me his.
BUT on the 1st day of December 1996 while praying to receive the Holy Spirit [Luke 11:13] suddenly I burst out in tongues as I received the Holy Spirit.
First, I experienced a mighty revelation about God and salvation and of the truth of scripture.
Second, I was instantly healed and set free from all my addictions from cigarettes, marijuana and injecting speed and heroin. And I mean instantly.
The power of God came into my body and the truth set me free from bondage to satan.
God through the power of his Spirit went on to set me free from alcohol, and to heal my lungs and my kidneys.
The Spirit of God healed my mind from drug induced psychosis and restored me to becoming a "good person."

Praying in tongues is wonderful and exercises the power of God within a disciple.
So many miracles and healings and other blessings, not just for myself, but for others as I pray for them in the Holy Spirit.

This gift of speaking in tongues is a mystery to me. I never have nor have I heard it. I do not think it necessary but I may be wrong.

I do not think it necessary but I may be wrong.

Just because you speak in tongues does not mean you are saved.

You want to know that you are saved, look at your life, there should be a big difference from when you did not know the lord, from when you claim to know the Lord.

Please understand,, I believe in tongues 100% as it is a amazing gift from the lord. but it is not required for salvation

There is much confusion over tongues by non-Pentecostals.
First Jesus said that believers would speak in tongues - this is a sign or evidence that a disciple has been baptized in the Holy Spirit.
We see this promise reiterated in Acts - it is the sign that a believer has been indwelt by the Spirit of God - a spiritual language to pray directly to God.
Acts 19:5 And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

1Corinthians 14:2 For who speaketh in a tongue speaketh not to men, but to God; for no one heareth; but in spirit he speaketh mysteries.

In addition to the above there are nine gifts given freely by the Holy Spirit to the body of Christ - the Spirit-filled church. [1Corinthians 12]
Three of these gifts are voice gifts - used in a church meeting - when the church comes together:
1Cor 12:10 and to another workings of powers; and to another prophecy; and to another discernings of spirits: to another kinds of tongues; and to another interpretation of tongues;
1Cor 14:26 What is it then, brethren? When ye come together, each hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all things be unto edifying.

Not every disciple who prays in tongues operates the voice gifts - and those who pray in tongues speak out a different tongue in the meeting from their prayer tongue.
Not everybody operates the gift of interpretation of tongues nor the gift of prophecy.
These gifts tend to be operated by the same people at our meetings in a congregation where ALL those baptized can speak in tongues.
Hence in 1Corinthians 14 where Paul is laying out the rules for orderly conduct of these gifts to the unruly Corinthians he teaches them that not all church members shall operate these gifts
at their worship meetings:
1Cor 14:27 If any speaketh in a tongue, let it be by two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret:
28 but if there be no interpreter, let him be silent in church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
29 And let prophets speak by two or three, and let the others discern.

One body with many members - the subject of 1Corinthians 12:
12:14 For the body also is not one member, but many.
15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body.
29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all power workers?
30 have all gifts of healings? speak all in tongues? do all interpret?

I have been praying in tongues for over 25 years now and yet I have never operated one of the voice gifts at a church meeting.

Why make baby noises and fall back as slain in the Spirit. what's that all about? I did it proves something?

Its obvious you reject the foundation of the teaching. Yet for all that is written they still reject Him.


Isaiah 28: 9-11 The people say, “Who does he think he is trying to teach and explain his message to? Does he think we are babies who were at their mother’s breast only a very short time ago? He speaks to us as though we were babies:“Saw lasaw saw lasawQaw laqaw qaw laqawZe’er sham ze’er sham.” So God will use this strange way of talking, and he will use other languages(not gibberish) to speak to these people.


1 Corinthians 14 :20-21 Brothers and sisters, don’t think like children. In evil things be like babies, but in your thinking you should be like full-grown adults. As the Scriptures[ say, “Using those who speak a different language and using the lips of foreigners, I will speak to these people. But even then, they will not obey me.”

There is a "prayer language", that you are talking about, which you have confused with the "Gift of Tongues".

Your NT tells you that your Prayer Language is "groanings that can't be uttered"......
See that?
That is the "prayer language" that isn't one of the 9 spiritual Gifts.

The Gift of Tongues, is not a prayer language, as a prayer language your NT tells you, is for your "self edification"....ITs for you......Just you.

The Gift of tongues, is a supernatural GIFT. You find it given to Peter in Acts 2, ..... during the feast of Pentecost.
So.... If you read Acts 2, you'll read that those JEWS who did not speak the language of Peter, "heard" him speak in their own language..".
See that?
That is not a prayer language that you are talking about.... That is a GIFT of a FOREIGN Language that Peter was able to Speak, that he had not learned, SO THAT.......those JEWS who were there, could understand Peter's message.

Let me dial it down for you a little deeper..

If God called you into the mission field and sent you to a place where they did not understand your language, then how can they hear your message?

ANSWER = God gives you their language so that you can SPEAK IT.

Tongues is prophecy in many languages any language God uses .God is not a God of confusion and wonderment ,

Same with idea of prayer. We pray according to what we understand . He helps us to find words not moaning.
