“Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.” (Colossians 3:1-4 NASB’95)
When we trust in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of our lives, with biblical faith, we are crucified with Christ in death to sin, and we are raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to God and to his righteousness. Therefore, we are to not let sin reign in our mortal bodies to where we obey its lusts. For if sin is what we obey, it results in death (not life). But if obedience to God is what we obey, it results in righteousness and sanctification, and its end, eternal life with God.
So, as those who have died with Christ to sin, and who have been raised with him to walk in newness of life in him, no longer as slaves to sin, but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness, we are to keep seeking the things of God. For our salvation from sin is not something that happens once in our lives, and now we are good to go to heaven, regardless of how we live. If our faith is genuine, we were saved (past), we are being saved (present) and we will be saved (future) when Christ returns for his bride.
[Matthew 24:9-14; Romans 2:6-8; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-24; Romans 13:11; 1 Corinthians 1:18; 1 Corinthians 15:1-2; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 4:17-32; 2 Timothy 1:8-9; Hebrews 9:28; 1 Peter 1:5]
Jesus said that if anyone would come after him he must deny self, take up his cross daily (die daily to sin) and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to our old lives of living in sin and for self, we will lose them for eternity. But if for Jesus’ sake we deny self, die daily to sin, and follow him in obedience to his commands, then we have the hope of salvation and eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls Jesus “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING the will of God (Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).
So, we who believe in Jesus Christ are encouraged all throughout the Scriptures that, as followers of Jesus Christ, we must continue in walks of obedience to his commands in holy living, and sin must no longer be what we practice if we want to inherit eternal life with God. For Jesus Christ gave his life up for us on that cross, in putting our sins to death with him, so that we will now die with him to sin, in practice, and so that we will walk in obedience to his commands, in practice, by the Spirit, in God’s power.
And our minds are to be focused on what is of God, and on the will of God for our lives, and we should be seeking his will for our lives and then walking in his purpose for our lives. And all of us who have believed in Jesus with biblical faith, which comes from God, have been given spiritual gifts, by the Spirit, and we have been assigned our body parts, by God, within the universal body of Christ, which we are to be living in, by the grace of God. And we are to be ministering to one another within the body of Christ.
For God did not put us on this earth just to entertain ourselves, or to live our lives as we want for our own purposes and glory. He has an assigned task for each and every one of us that we are to be doing, in his power, under his guidance and direction. And as his body we are all to be encouraging one another in our walks of faith, and exhorting one another daily so that none of us are led astray by the deceitfulness of sin. And we are to be speaking the truth in love to one another so that we all grow to maturity in Christ.
[Acts 2:42-47; Romans 12:1-8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31; 1 Corinthians 14:1-5; Galatians 6:1; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:1-16; Ephesians 5:15-21; Ephesians 6:10-20; Philippians 2:1-8; Colossians 3:12-16; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:13; Hebrews 10:23-25; James 5:19-20]
As the Deer
By Martin J. Nystrom
Based off Psalm 42:1
As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
