“Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.” (1 Peter 2:11-12 NASB’95)

When we believe in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of our lives, and we deny self, die with him to sin, and now follow him in walks of obedience to his commands, in practice, by his grace, in his power, we will now be outcasts among those whose lives are not surrendered to Jesus Christ to obey him and to do his will. And we may be regarded as “odd,” or as “old fashioned,” or as “legalistic,” even by others professing Jesus as Lord.

But we are not to let others’ opinions of us impact what we do and how we behave, and our relationships with Jesus Christ. We are not to surrender to the flesh once again just so that other people will not judge us, or criticize us, or reject us, or cast us aside as unwanted and as unnecessary. But we are to remain steadfast in our walks of faith in obedience to our Lord and not yield to fleshly and worldly lusts which wage war against our souls.

But this isn’t just about yielding to fleshly lusts, but this also includes ignoring God’s specific callings upon our lives (our body parts) and his giftings (spiritual gifts) because some preacher has convinced us that we cannot hear God speak to our hearts individually via the Holy Spirit living within us who was given to us to teach us all things about Jesus, and to counsel, instruct, guide, direct, correct, rebuke and encourage us.

For if we get this idea that only the written word of God can give us such teachings and instructions and guidance, then we miss out on God’s specific callings he has for each one of us in the areas of ministry to which he has called us. For if the Lord did not speak to me through his Spirit and call me to this ministry, then I would not be here doing what I am doing today in obedience to my Lord writing and posting what he teaches me in his word.

“Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil.” (1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 NASB’95)

So, what is this saying? We are not to quench the Spirit, and we are not to despise prophetic utterances. But we quench the Spirit when we ignore his voice within us speaking to us specifically about things he wants us to let go of, or things he wants us to do or to say or to write or to sing. Or he may be directing us to move to a different location where he wants to use us in other people’s lives where we have not gone before. And we are not going to find those specific directions for our lives in the written word.

But.. we must examine every voice we hear speaking to us because God is not the only one speaking to us. Satan is trying to interject his thoughts in our minds, too. And then there are the voices of the world we have to contend with, too. So we must examine what we believe we are hearing from the Spirit against the Scriptures to make certain that what we are hearing does not contradict what the Scriptures teach.

Now, Gentiles were non-Jews, but “Gentiles” was also used as a word to describe the ungodly, especially under the Old Covenant when the Gentiles were all the unbelieving. Other terms used are “the pagans,” “your unbelieving neighbors,” “unbelievers,” “the heathen,” and “the nations.” And this is how it is being used in this context, to refer to all who are not true people of faith in Jesus Christ, dying to sin and obeying his commands.

So, the unbelieving are not just all who make no professions of faith in Jesus Christ. The unbelieving are all who do not surrender their lives to Jesus Christ in submission to his Lordship over their lives and who continue in their sins and in disobedience to the Lord and to his will and purpose for their lives. And we are only going to know God’s specific callings upon our individual lives if we are open to hearing the Spirit’s voice speaking to us.

And let me say this. If I had not listened to the Spirit’s voice when he called me to this ministry, and if I had listened to what some preachers said to me, and if I had yielded to their opinions, and the opinions of other humans, I would never have written out and posted my daily times with the Lord on the internet for others to read and to share with others. But God is using me, and he is blessing this ministry, because I listened to his voice.

The Lord’s Anointed

An Original Work / December 16, 2011
Christ’s Free Servant, Sue J Love
Based off Isaiah 61

The Spirit of the Sov’reign Lord on me;
Anointed to preach the Good News;
Sent me to bind up the brokenhearted;
Proclaim freedom for the captives.
He sent me to preach release for pris’ners
Who are walking in sin’s darkness;
Proclaim God’s grace to all men who’ll listen;
And tell them about God’s judgments;
Comfort all who mourn;
Give crowns of beauty;
Oil of gladness and thanksgiving.

They will be called oaks of God’s righteousness,
A planting of our Savior, God,
For the display of our Lord’s splendor, and
They will rebuild God’s holy church.
God will renew them, and will restore them,
And you’ll be called priests of the Lord.
You will be ministers of our God, and
You will rejoice in salvation.
The Lord loves justice;
He is faithful to
Reward those who are seeking Him.

I delight greatly in the Lord;
My soul rejoices in my Savior, God.
He has clothed me with His salvation,
And in a robe of His righteousness.
He has given me priestly garments to wear,
As the bride of Jesus Christ.
As the garden of our Lord and Savior,
He causes us to grow in Him.
He makes righteousness,
Praise, and thanksgiving
Spring up before all the nations.
