about motives...

I read once this passage from Paul...

Philippians 1:<sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-29377">15</sup> It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. <sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-29378">16</sup> The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. <sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-29379">17</sup> The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. <sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-29380">18</sup> But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.

My first Bible was written in our own native dialect distributed by the Gideon International and its only a copy of the new testament. Well, it's a little bit hard to read though it is already written in our own dialect.

The first time I was given my own Old and New Bible was a translation of our own national language, and who knows if the translation is accurate or not? Praise God for it, I did grow in the Lord. Then here comes my topical study Bible written in English. uhm.. an NIV one:shock:... Lately, as I learn to browse the net for more resources, having now access for more other different translations and I do love the King James to read which is similar to my New testament Gideon Bible (blessed to have an English copy also which is easier to read i think than the one written in our own dialect..:shade

So, far... while having my NIV Bible, more or else its a great blessing to me to read and to know God more in personal and Biblical way in spite of its errors so to speak.

The motive behind the translation might be really false, but it had already reached many souls for the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen

I'm really being shocked to read and to know about this thing.

I'm thankful to God for enabling me to know Him more deeper in spite of this. That it is not the errors I am to see but the God who created me I am to seek. Amen

I understand that the NIV is a transliteration not a translation.

After reading the NASB for years I bought a NIV, big mistake.

What about the NASB? What is you opinion please?

How can I increase and decrease the font size?

Don't burn your NIV

On about page four of this thread there is a helpful list of comments on Bible translations to bear in mind.

• we need the Holy Spirits guidance

• translating from 2,000yr old Greek/Hebrew to modern English "perfectly" is impossible

• nothing can hinder His word from going forth

• KJV is not perfect

• where people are dogmatic about what translation or version to use, there is a lack of allowing the Holy Spirit to lead

• 
  bible is a tool (Word of GOD on tangible format), it does not replace the HolySpirit

• If we limit God speaking to us only by the canonized bible then eternity will be very repetitive and or redundant

Reading through the OP, I find the arguments against the NIV overstated and pretty unimpressive. Does the NIV rendering of 1 Timothy 3.16 really pervert the deity of Jesus Christ?

Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great:

He appeared in the flesh,
was vindicated by the Spirit,
was seen by angels,
was preached among the nations,
was believed on in the world,
was taken up in glory.

I don't think so. We all know who Paul is writing about, and Timothy, the original recipient, would certainly have known. This translation is a little less convenient as a proof text, but here's no controversy here.

The same goes for most of the other criticisms of the NIV in the opening post. Flimsy.

There may well be many points on which the NIV's rendering is weak, or could be improved. Many of the judgments made are not the best, I'm sure. But the message of God's love for the world and his saving action in Jesus Christ shines through the NIV as clearly as any other translation.
