We who believe in Jesus Christ are to be those who are living godly and morally pure and upright lives to God in obedience to his commands, who are no longer living to please the passions of our sinful flesh. So we should not be at war with one another based on the passions of the sinful flesh. We should not be sinning against one another and against God. We should not be living in adultery against God, for we cannot “make nice” with the world and not be in hostility toward God, making ourselves enemies of God.

“Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.” (James 4:7-10 NASB1995)

When we believe in Jesus Christ with God-honoring, God-gifted, and God-persuaded faith in the Lord Jesus, we die with Christ to sin that we might now live to God and to his righteousness in walks of surrender to his will in obedience to his commands. For Jesus Christ gave himself up for us on that cross to put our sins to death with him so that we will no longer walk in sin but in obedience to our Lord’s commands. For this is pleasing to the Lord. We are no longer to live for self but for him who died for us on that cross.

Therefore, we are to submit our lives to God to do his will and purpose for our lives, in his power, strength, and wisdom. But when we do that, our enemy Satan will be after us to try to bring us down, and to try to get us to go back to living in sin. And so we must resist him, and sometimes more than once before he flees. But he is not gone forever. He will try again and again to get us to fail and to back down and to retreat and to not serve the Lord Jesus with our lives but to live only for the sinful pleasures of the flesh.

So, again and again we must resist the devil and not give in to his evil plots to destroy us. And we must flee temptation whenever it arises and not toy with it even one little bit. And we must draw near to God via us surrendering our lives to the Lord to do his will, spending time with him in his word, and applying the truths of the Scriptures intended for us to live by in our daily lives, by his grace, in his power. And God will draw near to us when we draw near to him, and our desire is now for him and for what he wants for us.

And we are to be those who have clean hands and pure hearts, spiritually speaking, who are living in purity of mind and heart in accord with the will of God for our lives. And we are not to be double-minded, trying to please the flesh while claiming faith in Jesus Christ. For if we say that we are in fellowship with God, but while we walk (in conduct, in practice) in sin, we are liars. And if we claim to know God, but while we do not obey his commands, in practice, then we are liars who do not live by the truth.

So, we are to humble ourselves before God and weep over our sins to the point of genuine repentance which involves a change of mind and heart resulting in a change of lifestyle and behavioral practices. For when we believe in Jesus we are to die to sin so that we can now walk in obedience to his commands, in the power of God. And we are not to take God’s commandments lightly or think that we can keep living for the sinful passions of our flesh. For if we do that, we will not inherit eternal life.

As the Deer

By Martin J. Nystrom
Based off Psalm 42:1

As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You

You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
