Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rereward. Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday: And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in. If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. Isaiah 58:6-14

I see this scripture as about True fasting and keeping the sabbath holy.. I see it as a true lesson in fasting...That when we stop using what every one else says how to praise God and seeking Him He will answer.. While we claim to be free we are not as free as we think because we hold on to things.... things that long ago should have been given... walls of sin are built and He will not hear

Isa 58:9 Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;

Now when it coems to the Sabbath part I need to read and study and pray more... Others told me that because of Christ I am free from the Law including the Sabbath...

So I will have to post what I get from that later....

There are many lessons to be gleaned from this scripture.
First and foremost, "obedience is better than sacrifice."

1Samuel 15:22&23
22*But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Obedience is far better than sacrifice. Listening to him is much better than offering the fat of rams. 23*Rebellion is as bad as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you from being king.”

Secondly, When we fast by denying our flesh certain things like food, God has our attention, or at least that is supposed to be the purpose, but when we do the fast that God has mentioned in this scripture as His choice, we have His attention.

Thirdly, honoring the sabbath is done in much the same manner as we find forgiveness of sins. The old Law blood sacrifice of an inocent animal was needed to obtain forgiveness of sins, now it is obtained by the blood of Jesus. Jesus is our sabbath and we keep the sabbath by obeying Christ and remaining in Him.

Colossians 2
1*I want you to know how much I have agonized for you and for the church at Laodicea, and for many other friends who have never known me personally. 2*My goal is that they will be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have full confidence because they have complete understanding of God’s secret plan, which is Christ himself. 3*In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
4*I am telling you this so that no one will be able to deceive you with persuasive arguments. 5*For though I am far away from you, my heart is with you. And I am very happy because you are living as you should and because of your strong faith in Christ.
Freedom from Rules and New Life in Christ
6*And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to live in obedience to him. 7*Let your roots grow down into him and draw up nourishment from him, so you will grow in faith, strong and vigorous in the truth you were taught. Let your lives overflow with thanksgiving for all he has done.
8*Don’t let anyone lead you astray with empty philosophy and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the evil powers of this world,* and not from Christ. 9*For in Christ the fullness of God lives in a human body,* 10*and you are complete through your union with Christ. He is the Lord over every ruler and authority in the universe.
11*When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. It was a spiritual procedure—the cutting away of your sinful nature. 12*For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to a new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.
13*You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ. He forgave all our sins. 14*He canceled the record that contained the charges against us. He took it and destroyed it by nailing it to Christ’s cross. 15*In this way, God disarmed the evil rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross of Christ.
16*So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new-moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. 17*For these rules were only shadows of the real thing, Christ himself. 18*Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on self-denial. And don’t let anyone say you must worship angels, even though they say they have had visions about this. These people claim to be so humble, but their sinful minds have made them proud. 19*But they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For we are joined together in his body by his strong sinews, and we grow only as we get our nourishment and strength from God.
20*You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the evil powers of this world. So why do you keep on following rules of the world, such as, 21*“Don’t handle, don’t eat, don’t touch.” 22*Such rules are mere human teaching about things that are gone as soon as we use them. 23*These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, humility, and severe bodily discipline. But they have no effect when it comes to conquering a person’s evil thoughts and desires.

Amen: Very good answers, every man has his proper gift of God, it is up to us to find it:shade: And as members we can use this to edify the body... not all men/women have the same gifts...but I see they are being used here at TJ... and i hope it continues.

God bless Yeshua, Jesuslovesu, jiggyfly

Thank you Jiggy ! That was a great explanantion of the Sabbath.. I didnt wnat to say it with out the scripture and at that point I didnt know where it was..

more on fasting...

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if Jlu or jiggerfly (or anyone inspired to) could elaborate a little on fasting. I really liked what you said, Jlu, about stop using everyone elses idea of how to praise Him. To me, fasting seems like putting your money where your mouth is sorta. Showing God you mean it.

So sometimes I get off track with this, meaning that sometimes I intend to give God things that He may not be asking me for. Not that He is upset by it, just that He has to practically hit me over the head to show me things- like HEY OVER HERE KID! when I am doing things intending to do God's will and they're not bad - like the good being the enemy of the best kinda thing.

I don't know if that makes any sense, so I am going to continue with a specific example from jiggerfly's post "Secondly, When we fast by denying our flesh certain things like food, God has our attention, or at least that is supposed to be the purpose, but when we do the fast that God has mentioned in this scripture as His choice, we have His attention."

So what catches my attention is that it is HIS choice. So inspired by certain events and this scripture:

Matthew 19:12 ...there are eunuchs who have made themselves so for the sake if the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.

I went on a fast from dating/courtship for a year and it was really good for me. Now I am starting to wonder if it shouldn't be indefinate, but giving up hope on a family or a partner makes me feel pretty bummed out. But is that pruning? or a evidence that it's a hope He means to fufill?

It's sort of a stupid thing to waste my time wondering about since today I don't have to make any decisions about that kind of thing, but it makes me wonder about my own ideas to fast. I don't want to do things of my own strength but I do it anyway and then I am just - wrong. Which is fine...(happens a lot!) - I just, wanted to know if I could be a little wiser about discerning this kind of thing. (btw- I do cover these things in prayer and get counsel. Just want some more!)

Thanks!

To me, there is a lot of meaning to this scripture. When I was praying for my husband many years ago. The Lord showed me this scripture and, showed me to keep my eyes on Him. That as I fasted and prayed the Lord would do the work. We do not fast to move God, but fast to become closer to Him so we can hear Him.

We are the laborers in the field that Jesus talks about in the new testament. If we do as He calls us. We will be the repairers of the breach. As we let the light of the Lord come forth and minister the love of Jesus to others, we will change our families and others for generations to come.

Just my little piece of how God used this scripture in my life.

Your sister in Christ,

I read over "We do not fast to move God, but fast to become closer to Him so we can hear Him" a few times. Intellectually I know this, but maybe my heart isn't quite there. Sure, I gotta do some work and what He has me to do right now with those He has put in my life, but, I suppose I need to let Him work too! Be still and know He is God.
Good stuff. Thanks so much.

ffw I know that when called to fast and obey (the call) there is always always a reason (like ya didnt know that lol) What I mean by that is I have fasted and the presence of the Lord was so strong....it was so amazing... When my fast was over bad things hit my life hard and fast... I honestly was angry and felt so alone like maybe God Himself had left me... I cried out to Him and while He was still there I could not feel Him... Then Oh Thank you Jesus... I thought of my time of fasting and the things I learned and the love of Christ I felt and I knew God had it covered...

Ok so maybe there I went a little personal and not to the exact point I was trying to make but I think it needed to be said...

I honestly believe no person can tell you what to fast and the right way... The Lord will do that

Thanks Jlu, good points. Both that hard things happen when you are fasting and that the Lord is the only one that can show me what/how/when. Guess when I think of my times of fasting I see some really nutty ideas I have had about His will. But then he showed me they were nutty so that is something too!

Just had lunch and read some more CS Lewis and this really spoke to me too. (It's glorious to be on Christmas break and be able to just read and pray and ponder. :)

"My idea of God is not a divine idea. It has to be shattered time after time. He shatters it Himself. He is the great iconclast. Could we not almost say that this shattering is one of the marks of His presence? The Incarnation is the supreme example; it leaves all previous ideas of the Messiah in ruins. And most are 'offended' by the iconoclasm; and blessed are those who are not. But the same thing happens in our private prayers."

and from Yeshua's post, different version:
"Your ancient ruins will be rebuilt;
you will build on age-old foundations."

In Isaiah 58, after admonishing the people for making a prideful ritual out of fasting (for debate, causing strife, showing off in the sight of men), GOD is proclaiming that to deny oneself and favor others is the true fast of and for the LORD.

"Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward." (Matthew 6:16)
"But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light." (Matthew 6:20-22)

True loving obedience to GOD is shown by the giving of oneself to others.

Jesus said unto him, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." (Matthew 22:37-40)

The LORD's fast is motivated by a heart centered in HIM. Generosity to others acknowledges GOD.

My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:1-6)

Yeshua said:
Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. (Proverbs 3:7-8)

Self-admiration for being a good 'fast-er' opposes the purpose of GOD. Fasting is not to prove to anyone, not even oneself, that one can be a superior follower of the LORD.

Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; (Romans 12:10)
Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. (Romans 12:16)

The fast of the LORD quickens His restoration power within us. We become purified for the Holy Spirit to use us as more effective intercessory instruments.

And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? And he said unto them, "This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting." (Mark 9:28-29)*

GOD-led fasting breaks up pride that interferes with true repentance and compassion. We get out of the way, so to speak. Thus comes surrender to Jesus as our sole advocate.

Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. (James 4:9-10)

Isaiah 58:6-14
Jesus likewise addressed the hypocrisy of preferring self over God. There was God Himself right in front of them, yet of all the ludicrous motivations, the Pharisees showed in their very questions that what they cared about was proving their superiority by comparing themselves to other men.

And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? (Mark 2:18)
And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? (Mark 2:23-24)
And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. (Mark 2:27-28)

As our Lord leads, we fast while the Bridegroom is not physically present. "But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days." (Mark 20:2)
While we have the model of Jesus fasting in the desert during the temptation, fasting was originally a levitical requirement. There were also many sabbath days that were levitical holy days and I believe this is primarily to what Colossians chapter 2 refers.

The contention of Jesus about the sabbath is that prideful men had reduced it to a set of man-made rules. The Lord of the sabbath was there with them and they were looking to themselves and other men.

The Sabbath of the Fourth Commandment is separated from other sabbath "holidays."

"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." (Exodus 20:8-11)

Unlike other traditions, it seems important to consider that observing the weekly Sabbath is one of the Ten Commandments! It is insurance that our own work (even work for the LORD) does not become a stumbling block. Praise GOD, He made the sabbath for man. And we are not held to levitical rigidity, thanks to Christ Jesus.
Yet honoring the Fourth Commandment is not only good for our physical and spiritual health, when observed in its true spirit it refreshes our understanding that we are made in the image GOD. Our lives and the world are an unimaginable gift from HIM. While we truly obtain our rest in every circumstance by seeking Jesus, keeping the Sabbath gives glory to Him through Whom all things were made. Abiding in Him gives us the desire to obey the commandments of His Father and ours.

"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill." (Matthew 5:17)

(from previous post - I don't know how to quote yet.)

These parts particularly ministered to me, and leaves me with some good questions for myself. Sometimes it seems that the fast is breaking down walls within me or helps someone, and other times it seems that my pride inflates. Probably something to do with when He's asking and when I think its a good idea.

To God be the glory. Thank you To Christ!

So what should we believe?

So what should we believe? Is God given to changing his mind as some Moslems believe? Could it be that God has spoken plainly to us but yet we still fail to understand? Wasn't the word that we have received from God right from the beginning, LOVE?

James 1:16-17 Make no mistake about this my dear brothers, all that is good, all that is perfect is given us from above; it comes down from the Father of all light; with Him there is no such thing as alteration, no shadow caused by change.

*That is so beatutiful, Yesua! And the last 2 scriptures; Isaiah 58:13 & 14, kind of got me thinking. Wouldn't it be nice to spend one whole day alone with GOD. And wouldn't it be nice if that day is on the Sabbath {Sunday}
Now I know we all go to Church on Sunday {some people on Saturday or wendsday} But being Sunday for me, wouldn't it just be nice to meditate alone with GOD. I mean to spend one whole day a lone with HIM. I don't quite know what I am trying to say, because everyday we are sharing the whole day with GOD, but to put a day aside just for GOD & I or anyone picks a day just to spend it with GOD a lone - sounds so awesome to me!
Any comments are welcome! *genesis!

_____________________________

...honoring the sabbath is done in much the same manner as we find forgiveness of sins. The old Law blood sacrifice of an inocent animal was needed to obtain forgiveness of sins, now it is obtained by the blood of Jesus. Jesus is our sabbath and we keep the sabbath by obeying Christ and remaining in Him.

I do hope that whatever I write is not my own suggestion, but what comes from our Lord in His gracious answer to prayer.

I thought I had elaborated in my previous post, though here are the further thoughts that arise in accordance with your input.

As I previously stated, my agreement with you is that Jesus gives us rest for all circumstances and we obtain it only by seeking to abide in Him.

Of course, it is clear the New Covenant of Jesus Christ is remedy for that none can unerringly keep the Ten Commandments. It is written that Jesus is the sacrificial Lamb providing forgiveness for sins. Nowhere does The Bible state that the LORD's sabbath is optional because of Christ. He says He is "the Way, the Truth and the Life." He says He is our food. He says He gives us rest. Jesus says He is Lord of the sabbath; He does not say He is the sabbath. This is not to say that thinking of Jesus as our sabbath is unmerited. Yet there were hundreds of sacrifices and sacraments required, and only the weekly Sabbath observance was written on GOD's original stone tablets. (written in stone, heh, heh...)

You know that the answer to keeping the sabbath can come only from the Spirit of GOD directing the heart of each as only He knows us. What is work to one may not be to another. What actions are selfish motivation to one may not be to another. You already pointed out that the bottom line of Colossians chapter 2 is that none should feel condemned by the observances of others, because Christ is our fulfillment.

While forgiveness for sins comes only from Jesus, all of us would rather our residence in Christ bring us to such a place of maturity that His life in us shall keep us from sin. As you also know, the more we grow in Christ, the more He brings to light our hidden areas of self that we have not surrendered.

It is easy to keep the Commandments not to murder, commit adultery, or steal. It is usually much harder to even recognize the ways we disobey other Commandments. Especially subtle idolatries and covetousness are not so easily acknowledged. Such require requesting the Holy Spirit to search us and enable "bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:5)

Surely the lives of some preclude a weekly Sabbath day, and regarding that Christ frees from the letter of the law. Each person must ask in the Spirit, "As my discipline comes from Christ, do I keep the Sabbath as He makes me able?" For many, the answer is probably "no."

Maintaining the type of discipline that enables us to regularly choose "the better part" (Luke 10:42) is our obedience. That is to make the time for setting aside all else and, without a personal agenda, sit at the feet of Jesus. If one day a week is genuinely impossible, periodic times still are essential. Few can judge themselves to be resting in Christ at all times. Because GOD included His sabbath amidst the other great Commandments is reason enough to seriously consider our compliance in love.

Please pardon any superfluity of my own words, for the only unfailing right answer comes from contemplating the Scriptures:

Exodus 20:8-11
"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."

And returning to Isaiah 58:13,
If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

Great and wonderful new surprises with Jesus to you in 2006!

Galations 3:10-23
10*But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, “Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all these commands that are written in God’s Book of the Law.”* 11*Consequently, it is clear that no one can ever be right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”* 12*How different from this way of faith is the way of law, which says, “If you wish to find life by obeying the law, you must obey all of its commands.”* 13*But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”* 14*Through the work of Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham, and we Christians receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith.
The Law and God’s Promises
15*Dear brothers and sisters,* here’s an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or amend an irrevocable agreement, so it is in this case. 16*God gave the promise to Abraham and his child.* And notice that it doesn’t say the promise was to his children,* as if it meant many descendants. But the promise was to his child—and that, of course, means Christ. 17*This is what I am trying to say: The agreement God made with Abraham could not be canceled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses. God would be breaking his promise. 18*For if the inheritance could be received only by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of accepting God’s promise. But God gave it to Abraham as a promise.
19*Well then, why was the law given? It was given to show people how guilty they are. But this system of law was to last only until the coming of the child to whom God’s promise was made. And there is this further difference. God gave his laws to angels to give to Moses, who was the mediator between God and the people. 20*Now a mediator is needed if two people enter into an agreement, but God acted on his own when he made his promise to Abraham.
21*Well then, is there a conflict between God’s law and God’s promises? Absolutely not! If the law could have given us new life, we could have been made right with God by obeying it. 22 But the Scriptures have declared that we are all prisoners of sin, so the only way to receive God’s promise is to believe in Jesus Christ.
23*Until faith in Christ was shown to us as the way of becoming right with God, we were guarded by the law. We were kept in protective custody, so to speak, until we could put our faith in the coming Savior.

Romans 10:1-4
1*Dear brothers and sisters,* the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is that the Jewish people might be saved. 2*I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. 3*For they don’t understand God’s way of making people right with himself. Instead, they are clinging to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law. They won’t go along with God’s way. 4*For Christ has accomplished the whole purpose* of the law. All who believe in him are made right with God.

Galations 5:1-4
1*So Christ has really set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.
2*Listen! I, Paul, tell you this: If you are counting on circumcision to make you right with God, then Christ cannot help you. 3 I’ll say it again. If you are trying to find favor with God by being circumcised, you must obey all of the regulations in the whole law of Moses. 4 For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace.

2Corinthians 3:7-11
7*That old system of law etched in stone led to death, yet it began with such glory that the people of Israel could not bear to look at Moses’ face. For his face shone with the glory of God, even though the brightness was already fading away. 8*Shouldn’t we expect far greater glory when the Holy Spirit is giving life? 9*If the old covenant, which brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new covenant, which makes us right with God! 10*In fact, that first glory was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory of the new covenant. 11*So if the old covenant, which has been set aside, was full of glory, then the new covenant, which remains forever, has far greater glory.

OLD COVENANT
Exodus 20-
1*Then God instructed the people as follows:
2*“I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in Egypt.
3*“Do not worship any other gods besides me.
4*“Do not make idols of any kind, whether in the shape of birds or animals or fish. 5*You must never worship or bow down to them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not share your affection with any other god! I do not leave unpunished the sins of those who hate me, but I punish the children for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generations. 6*But I lavish my love on those who love me and obey my commands, even for a thousand generations.
7*“Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
8*“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9*Six days a week are set apart for your daily duties and regular work, 10*but the seventh day is a day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any kind of work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. 11*For in six days the Lord made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; then he rested on the seventh day. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
12*“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God will give you.
13*“Do not murder.
14*“Do not commit adultery.
15*“Do not steal.
16*“Do not testify falsely against your neighbor.
17*“Do not covet your neighbor’s house. Do not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else your neighbor owns.”
18*When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the horn, and when they saw the lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.
19*And they said to Moses, “You tell us what God says, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us. If he does, we will die!”
20*“Don’t be afraid,” Moses said, “for God has come in this way to show you his awesome power. From now on, let your fear of him keep you from sinning!”
21*As the people stood in the distance, Moses entered into the deep darkness where God was.
Proper Use of Altars
22*And the Lord said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: You are witnesses that I have spoken to you from heaven. 23 Remember, you must not make or worship idols of silver or gold.
24*“The altars you make for me must be simple altars of earth. Offer on such altars your sacrifices to me—your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Build altars in the places where I remind you who I am, and I will come and bless you there. 25*If you build altars from stone, use only uncut stones. Do not chip or shape the stones with a tool, for that would make them unfit for holy use. 26*And you may not approach my altar by steps. If you do, someone might look up under the skirts of your clothing and see your nakedness.

Exodus 21
1*“Here are some other instructions you must present to Israel:
2*“If you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for only six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom. 3*If he was single when he became your slave and then married afterward, only he will go free in the seventh year. But if he was married before he became a slave, then his wife will be freed with him.
4*“If his master gave him a wife while he was a slave, and they had sons or daughters, then the man will be free in the seventh year, but his wife and children will still belong to his master. 5*But the slave may plainly declare, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children. I would rather not go free.’ 6*If he does this, his master must present him before God.* Then his master must take him to the door and publicly pierce his ear with an awl. After that, the slave will belong to his master forever.
7*“When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. 8*If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. 9*And if the slave girl’s owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. 10*If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. 11*If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment.
Cases of Personal Injury
12*“Anyone who hits a person hard enough to cause death must be put to death. 13*But if it is an accident and God allows it to happen, I will appoint a place where the slayer can run for safety. 14*However, if someone deliberately attacks and kills another person, then the slayer must be dragged even from my altar and put to death.
15*“Anyone who strikes father or mother must be put to death.
16*“Kidnappers must be killed, whether they are caught in possession of their victims or have already sold them as slaves.
17*“Anyone who curses father or mother must be put to death.
18*“Now suppose two people quarrel, and one hits the other with a stone or fist, causing injury but not death. 19*If the injured person is later able to walk again, even with a crutch, the assailant will be innocent. Nonetheless, the assailant must pay for time lost because of the injury and must pay for the medical expenses.
20*“If a male or female slave is beaten and dies, the owner must be punished. 21*If the slave recovers after a couple of days, however, then the owner should not be punished, since the slave is the owner’s property.
22*“Now suppose two people are fighting, and in the process, they hurt a pregnant woman so her child is born prematurely. If no further harm results, then the person responsible must pay damages in the amount the woman’s husband demands and the judges approve. 23*But if any harm results, then the offender must be punished according to the injury. If the result is death, the offender must be executed. 24*If an eye is injured, injure the eye of the person who did it. If a tooth gets knocked out, knock out the tooth of the person who did it. Similarly, the payment must be hand for hand, foot for foot, 25*burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.
26*“If an owner hits a male or female slave in the eye and the eye is blinded, then the slave may go free because of the eye. 27*And if an owner knocks out the tooth of a male or female slave, the slave should be released in payment for the tooth.
28*“If a bull gores a man or woman to death, the bull must be stoned, and its flesh may not be eaten. In such a case, however, the owner will not be held liable. 29*Suppose, on the other hand, that the owner knew the bull had gored people in the past, yet the bull was not kept under control. If this is true and if the bull kills someone, it must be stoned, and the owner must also be killed. 30 However, the dead person’s relatives may accept payment from the owner of the bull to compensate for the loss of life. The owner will have to pay whatever is demanded.
31*“The same principle applies if the bull gores a boy or a girl. 32*But if the bull gores a slave, either male or female, the slave’s owner is to be given thirty silver coins* in payment, and the bull must be stoned.
33*“Suppose someone digs or uncovers a well and fails to cover it, and then an ox or a donkey falls into it. 34*The owner of the well must pay in full for the dead animal but then gets to keep it.
35*“If someone’s bull injures a neighbor’s bull and the injured bull dies, then the two owners must sell the live bull and divide the money between them. Each will also own half of the dead bull. 36*But if the bull was known from past experience to gore, yet its owner failed to keep it under control, the money will not be divided. The owner of the living bull must pay in full for the dead bull but then gets to keep it.
Exodus 22
1*“A fine must be paid by anyone who steals an ox or sheep and then kills or sells it. For oxen the fine is five oxen for each one stolen. For sheep the fine is four sheep for each one stolen.
2*“If a thief is caught in the act of breaking into a house and is killed in the process, the person who killed the thief is not guilty. 3*But if it happens in daylight, the one who killed the thief is guilty of murder.
“A thief who is caught must pay in full for everything that was stolen. If payment is not made, the thief must be sold as a slave to pay the debt. 4*If someone steals an ox or a donkey or a sheep and it is recovered alive, then the thief must pay double the value.
5*“If an animal is grazing in a field or vineyard and the owner lets it stray into someone else’s field to graze, then the animal’s owner must pay damages in the form of high-quality grain or grapes.
6*“If a fire gets out of control and goes into another person’s field, destroying the sheaves or the standing grain, then the one who started the fire must pay for the lost crops.
7*“Suppose someone entrusts money or goods to a neighbor, and they are stolen from the neighbor’s house. If the thief is found, the fine is double the value of what was stolen. 8 But if the thief is not found, God* will determine whether or not it was the neighbor who stole the property.
9*“Suppose there is a dispute between two people as to who owns a particular ox, donkey, sheep, article of clothing, or anything else. Both parties must come before God* for a decision, and the person whom God declares* guilty must pay double to the other.
10*“Now suppose someone asks a neighbor to care for a donkey, ox, sheep, or any other animal, but it dies or is injured or gets away, and there is no eyewitness to report just what happened. 11*The neighbor must then take an oath of innocence in the presence of the Lord. The owner must accept the neighbor’s word, and no payment will be required. 12*But if the animal or property was stolen, payment must be made to the owner. 13*If it was attacked by a wild animal, the carcass must be shown as evidence, and no payment will be required.
14*“If someone borrows an animal from a neighbor and it is injured or killed, and if the owner was not there at the time, the person who borrowed it must pay for it. 15*But if the owner is there, no payment is required. And no payment is required if the animal was rented because this loss was covered by the rental fee.
Social Responsibility
16*“If a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged to anyone and sleeps with her, he must pay the customary dowry and accept her as his wife. 17*But if her father refuses to let her marry him, the man must still pay the money for her dowry.
18*“A sorceress must not be allowed to live.
19*“Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal must be executed.
20*“Anyone who sacrifices to any god other than the Lord must be destroyed.
21*“Do not oppress foreigners in any way. Remember, you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.
22*“Do not exploit widows or orphans. 23*If you do and they cry out to me, then I will surely help them. 24*My anger will blaze forth against you, and I will kill you with the sword. Your wives will become widows, and your children will become fatherless.
25*“If you lend money to a fellow Hebrew in need, do not be like a money lender, charging interest. 26*If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge of repayment, you must return it by nightfall. 27*Your neighbor will need it to stay warm during the night. If you do not return it and your neighbor cries out to me for help, then I will hear, for I am very merciful.
28*“Do not blaspheme God* or curse anyone who rules over you.
29*“Do not hold anything back when you give me the tithe of your crops and your wine.
“You must make the necessary payment for redemption of your firstborn sons.
30*“You must also give me the firstborn of your cattle and sheep. Leave the newborn animal with its mother for seven days; then give it to me on the eighth day.
31*“You are my own holy people. Therefore, do not eat any animal that has been attacked and killed by a wild animal. Throw its carcass out for the dogs to eat.
Exodus 24
1*“Do not pass along false reports. Do not cooperate with evil people by telling lies on the witness stand.
2*“Do not join a crowd that intends to do evil. When you are on the witness stand, do not be swayed in your testimony by the opinion of the majority. 3*And do not slant your testimony in favor of a person just because that person is poor.
4*“If you come upon your enemy’s ox or donkey that has strayed away, take it back to its owner. 5*If you see the donkey of someone who hates you struggling beneath a heavy load, do not walk by. Instead, stop and offer to help.
6*“Do not twist justice against people simply because they are poor.
7*“Keep far away from falsely charging anyone with evil. Never put an innocent or honest person to death. I will not allow anyone guilty of this to go free.
8*“Take no bribes, for a bribe makes you ignore something that you clearly see. A bribe always hurts the cause of the person who is in the right.
9*“Do not oppress the foreigners living among you. You know what it is like to be a foreigner. Remember your own experience in the land of Egypt.
10*“Plant and harvest your crops for six years, 11*but let the land rest and lie fallow during the seventh year. Then let the poor among you harvest any volunteer crop that may come up. Leave the rest for the animals to eat. The same applies to your vineyards and olive groves.
12*“Work for six days, and rest on the seventh. This will give your ox and your donkey a chance to rest. It will also allow the people of your household, including your slaves and visitors, to be refreshed.
13*“Be sure to obey all my instructions. And remember, never pray to or swear by any other gods. Do not even mention their names.
Three Annual Festivals
14*“Each year you must celebrate three festivals in my honor. 15*The first is the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast, just as I commanded you before. This festival will be an annual event at the appointed time in early spring,* for that is the anniversary of your exodus from Egypt. Everyone must bring me a sacrifice at that time. 16*You must also celebrate the Festival of Harvest,* when you bring me the first crops of your harvest. Finally, you are to celebrate the Festival of the Final Harvest* at the end of the harvest season. 17*At these three times each year, every man in Israel must appear before the Sovereign Lord.
18*“Sacrificial blood must never be offered together with bread that has yeast in it. And no sacrificial fat may be left unoffered until the next morning.
19*“As you harvest each of your crops, bring me a choice sample of the first day’s harvest. It must be offered to the Lord your God.
“You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.
A Promise of the Lord’s Presence
20*“See, I am sending my angel before you to lead you safely to the land I have prepared for you. 21*Pay attention to him, and obey all of his instructions. Do not rebel against him, for he will not forgive your sins. He is my representative—he bears my name. 22*But if you are careful to obey him, following all my instructions, then I will be an enemy to your enemies, and I will oppose those who oppose you. 23*For my angel will go before you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites, and Jebusites, so you may live there. And I will destroy them. 24*Do not worship the gods of these other nations or serve them in any way, and never follow their evil example. Instead, you must utterly conquer them and break down their shameful idols.
25*“You must serve only the Lord your God. If you do, I will bless you with food and water, and I will keep you healthy. 26*There will be no miscarriages or infertility among your people, and I will give you long, full lives.
27*“I will send my terror upon all the people whose lands you invade, and they will panic before you. 28*I will send hornets ahead of you to drive out the Hivites, Canaanites, and Hittites. 29*But I will not do this all in one year because the land would become a wilderness, and the wild animals would become too many to control. 30*I will drive them out a little at a time until your population has increased enough to fill the land. 31*And I will fix your boundaries from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea,* and from the southern deserts to the Euphrates River.* I will help you defeat the people now living in the land, and you will drive them out ahead of you.
32*“Make no treaties with them and have nothing to do with their gods. 33*Do not even let them live among you! If you do, they will infect you with their sin of idol worship, and that would be disastrous for you.

I choose the new covenant which is Christ and Him alone.

So what should we believe? Is God given to changing his mind as some Moslems believe? Could it be that God has spoken plainly to us but yet we still fail to understand? Wasn't the word that we have received from God right from the beginning, LOVE?
Exodus 32:7-14
7*And the Lord said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: 8 they have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 9*And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: 10 now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.
11*And Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, Lord, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand? 12*Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people. 13*Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever. 14*And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.
