Once born opf GOD!We are no longer of the earth. We are of the family of GOD! God and angels speak in a different language,That is one tongue.it is our spirit praying to the LORD for our needs. We in the flesh do not normally understand!
Another is speak in tongues which people from many or another nation will hear and understand!
As with all things given by the HOLY GHOST.These things are spiritual. And must be believed ,before they are given to us!Took me a long time to speak in tongues.I had experianced other things before I did it!
Everything from the HOLY GHOST IS VERY GOOD.And should be sought!GOD ONLY GIVES GOOD GIFTS>

pixie, speaking in tongues is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 14, these are different from the fruits of the Holy Spirit. When praying in tongues in our own private prayer times we rarely know what we are praying, it is a language known only to the Holy Spirit. Sometimes when we don't know what to pray in our own language, we can use our gift of tongues. It is a wonderful gift to communicate with my Father.

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ to all. I do speak in tongues but I tend to sing in tongues more. I once presented this study in a congregation and it was helpful. I trust that it will prove edifying.

THE QUESTION OF TONGUES
(A Bible study by brother Tarran Dookie)

THE PROMISE

Mk.16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.

1 Cor.7: 7-10 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues.

1 Cor.13: 8-12 8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

The gift of tongues was promised by Jesus Christ to His disciples and is one of the gifts of the Spirit mentioned in 1 Corinthians ch.15. If the gift of tongues has ceased then all the gifts have ceased. If the gifts have ceased , then that which is perfect has come and it is no longer ‘then face to face’ but rather ‘now face to face’. Of course this is not the case. Therefore, the gift of tongues has not ceased. There are those who despise tongues and argue that many who speak in tongues use the same words over and over again and therefore this cannot be of God. But isn’t it true that many pray, praise and worship God using the same words over and over again? Must we also conclude that what they say is not of God? Whether we speak in tongues or not, we should all seek to walk more deeply with the Lord that He may give us more words to commune with Him.

THE OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND TONGUES

Acts 2: 4-6 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

Acts 10: 44-48 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

Acts 19: 1-7 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve.

In these passages in Acts we see an outpouring of the Holy Spirit accompanied by tongues. These passages teach us that we cannot restrict the Holy Spirit and sometimes an entire assembly may magnify the Lord in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance. In an atmosphere of praise and worship some may be magnifying God by speaking in tongues while others may be doing so in their normal language. In such a situation there would be no need for an interpreter as this is a case of magnifying God rather than edifying or exhorting one another.

TONGUES WITH INTERPRETATION

1 Cor. 14: 1-5 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

1 Cor.14: 27-28 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

When it comes to the exercising of gifts for the benefit of the church the apostle Paul teaches that prophesying is better than speaking in tongues unless there is interpretation. Tongues with interpretation is virtually the same as prophesying and is unto edification of the church. Without interpretation the person is to speak to himself and to God. Whereas magnifying God with tongues would not require interpretation.

TONGUES AS A SIGN

1 Cor.14: 21-25 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

Sometimes the word sign refers to a miracle as in signs and wonders. But the word ‘sign’ may also mean a witness as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites (Lk.11;29-30). God declared that He would speak to the Israelites with another tongue and yet they would not hear (Is.28:11-12). On the day of Pentecost tongues were spoken and although 3000 were baptised the majority of Jews still rejected the gospel. ‘Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not,’ says Paul. Here tongues are for a sign or witness unto the unbelievers who rejected the word even though they understood the languages spoken and marvelled that it was spoken by Galileans. But if tongues are spoken by everyone in the assembly and there be no interpretation and unbelievers come in and cannot understand what is being said such tongues will not be a sign to them. Therefore Paul says it is better to prophesy or speak in tongues with an interpreter. However, speaking in tongues with an interpreter must not be confused with praising and magnifying God , where there is no need for an interpreter since it is unto God.

TONGUES KNOWN AND UNKNOWN

In 1 Corinthians 13 Paul shows the supremacy of love over gifts and in verse 1 he uses a phrase that puzzles some. He refers to the tongues of men and of angels. When someone is speaking in tongues the language is not known to him. If the tongues are known by others as on the day of Pentecost this is an instance of tongues of men or known tongues. Where the language spoken is not known to the speaker or the audience this is an instance of unknown tongues (perhaps the tongues of angels). The interpreter will be able to interpret because of the gift of interpretation and not because of a recognition of the language.

PRAYING IN TONGUES

1 Cor.14: 14-19 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

If someone prays in an unknown tongue in an assembly the person who does not understand would not be able to say Amen. Hence the apostle Paul says that he would not only pray in tongues (or pray with the Spirit) but also he would pray with the understanding. Therefore we may conclude that praying in tongues is not forbidden in the assembly but that the person so praying must also pray with the understanding so that others may say Amen.

Apart from the assembly a person may pray in tongues privately. It should be clear from 1 Cor.14:18-19 that Paul often, prayed in tongues privately. In such prayer the understanding is unfruitful but the Spirit prays and the person is edified.

SINGING IN TONGUES

1 Cor.14: 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

Eph.5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. (See also Col.3:16)

Many have wondered what are the spiritual songs referred to in Eph.5:19 and Col.3:16 since they are not the same as psalms and hymns. In 1 Cor.14:15 Paul says ‘I will sing with the Spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.’ When we sing in tongues or with the spirit this is a type of singing of spiritual songs.

CONCLUSION

We should not make the mistake of concluding that an outpouring of the Spirit with tongues is the same as being filled with the Spirit. The disciples at Ephesus, even though they were new believers , were given the gift of tongues. New believers are babes in Christ and need to grow. Only after sufficient growth will such believers experience fullness of the Spirit. The Corinthians had many of the gifts including tongues but Paul said that many of them were carnal. Many may speak with tongues and not be filled with the Spirit. Many may be filled with the Spirit and not speak with tongues. But let us not overlook the fact that some have received the outpouring of the Spirit with tongues and have never been the same again. May God touch us and change us!

Dear brother i can only tell you my experiences and i hope i dont confuse. but maybe give you another incite.
I was told by my pastor when i went to main stream church. that because i could not talk in tongues i was not saved and i could not partake in the heavenly calling.
There was a brother an elderly gentleman who also could not speak in tongues. he even went to israel and holy sites in desperation to find God as he thought God had abandoned him.
My mother went around to see him as he had not attended church for a while. when she got into his house she found him hanging from from his loft.
He thought he could no longer live another day without God.
The pastor felt no remorse for his death.
I also would like to say that i go to a monestry retreat in England. the monks there told me they had a large group of evangelical christians had been there the week before. they all had prayer together. the pastor started to pray in tongues and one of the old monks cried out blasthemy. apprantly the pastor was blastheming in a old tongue called bask. as the old monk could speak this tongue. they were asked to leave the abbey.
I do out reach on the streets and have also met many pagan witches who speak in tongues as well.
I think because the church is so much in a state. and the numbers are dropping. they are desperate to exept anything and dont seem to dare challenge any spirit. that comes amongst them. paul said to test the spirit and see if its from God. i dont see this in the main stream church circles ive been in.
Beware brother satan has come amongst the church in the last days and has transformed himself into an angel of light.
There are some genniue tongue talking christians brother. but if there is no interpetation then i dont beliave the holy spirit is working there. our God is not a God of confussion and is a God of order.
Remember brother test all things.
ive done a article on house churches in the threads have a look brother.
if your church has slipped into apostacy get out brother and find a church that is teaching and holding fast to the word of God.
maybe find a house church and see where God wants you to grow.

Email me if you want to chat take care and may the God of isarel bless you and protect you. trusttheway@yahoo.co.uk

Mark you say if there is no interpretation then you don't believe the Holy Spirit is working there. 1 Corinthians 14:2 "For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him...." This states clearly that speaking in an unknown tongue is speaking to God and not man. It is edifying ones self, building ones self up.

Dear brother i most proberly never made mayself very clear on what i commented on above. paul made it clear that there should be an intreptation of the tongue used when it was spoken out loud. so that the church would benifit from the message or word from God.
Yes i agree totally if you have the gift of tongues then when we pray in a tongue it is between you and God.
I have been into so many churches here in the UK. that when you walk in during worship that nearly all are speaking in tongues. this makes some people who dont speak in tongues. feel as if they are left out and reciave no benifit at all.
So i feel that the holy spirit can see what confusion is going on. surely he would send people to interete the tongues spoken. as but i dont seeour God is a God of total order. this and have not seen this in any AOG churches i have attended.
this is not biblical and people seem to wear the gift like a medal.
when it is the least of the gifts.
I belaive that we have to becarefull when our salvation is concerned and to test all things to see if they are from Yahweh. because satan also can deciave and has done so much damage in the church already.
am not anti tongue speaking. im just saying the way others see things and showing a veiw point. which is shown amongst many other people who posses the greater gifts of the holy spirit. these people such as on fire evangelist have prophets seem to be sadly pushed to one side if they dont show the gift of tongues.

Shalom and may the God of Israel bless you all <><

I cannot speak for other churches and I wont generalise. In my own church a Sunday morning service is mainly for believers, anyone coming in, Christian or not, knows it is a pentecostal church and as such tongues may be spoken. When we are worshipping God we are encouraged to pray or sing in our tongues to God. Because these are our own individual tongues they are not interpreted - you'd be there all day if they all were. That does not mean things are disorderly or done without the anointing of the Holy Spirit. It's simply corporate worship where we all praise and worship the Lord together.

paul said if a unbeliaver should come in amongst you and you were all talking in tongues he would think your mad. this would not edify the unbeliaver walking into a church at all. in fact he would most proberly never walk into a church again. i know loads of unbeliavers who would never go there to a all talking tongue talking church.. the bible does not tell us any where that we should all meet togehter and all talk in tongues . this is unscriptual and was not practised by the early church.
I know many christians who have felt isolated because they dont talk in tongues. paul said not all speak in tongues. some have other gifts.
This concerns me and has concerned many other christians i know.
The church or meeting place is not just for beliavers as you said. the door should be open for unsaved to walk through the doors. if they do and they walk out because of they dont understand whats going on. and never walk in a church again. then does not this bother you ?. tongues have stumbled many over the years sister. its time for people in evangelical circles to look at there structure and think about this carefully.
thousands leave the church in the west each week. so maybe now is a good time to remove the blinkers. its also a good time to think about reaching the lost and get out of the 4 wall mentality. and use your gifts on the streets. jesus does not care what gift he has given us. he will ask what did you do with it.
He will ask did you feed me when i was hungry. did you clothe me.
these are the things that matter to God. these will be the questions he asks you on judgement day.
Be blessed and remember God esablished a church with no walls.

Shalom mark <><

Brothers I am not going to get into arguments with you. All denominations have their own ways of doing things, and God will direct people to churches that suit them. Church doors are wide open for anyone to come and go as they please. There are two sides to every story and many people can testify of coming into a church where there is freedom in the Spirit and Gods Name is glorified. It will be a sad day when I can no longer have freedom to come into God's house and praise and worship Him in spirit and truth.

:rose: Sunshine, I believe in what you said. We should be free to worship in the way that God so chooses. I have spoken in tongue for the past 5 years or so, but only on my own and to myself. It is a gift that I wish I could share with others, considering that I am able to interpet most of what I say. I remember when I was first blessed with this, I was completly confused and got out a tape recorder, because I didn't know what was happening. I have recently joined a Pentecostal church and I know that they share in the fruits of the spirit, so I believe I will finally have someone to share it with. May God bless any of you that have been blessed with any gift of the Spirit and may you find people that share your belief. Amen:rose:

you guys i have a question, and it's been bugging me for the longest time and I want some answers..I dont know if i will get any or not..this is a complicated matter. but ok, most people believe that if you have the gift of tongues you have Holy Spirit, aka, if you dont have tongues, you dont have Holy Spirit. I really dont believe that. My belief, well for now, is that you get babtized by the Spirit when you repent and Jesus comes into your heart. I dont know.. i talked to a friend and she said that Jesus and the Holy Spirit are two different things even though they are one as a whole. it's so complicated and i'm lost, can someone help out with biblical information? well thanks so much. :) adieu.
ur sis, Tanya

Let me first say that the gift of tongues is truly a gift of the holy spirit. But is this gibberish style truly a manesfestation of the Holy Spirit. I mean is God the God of confusion? No indeed the bible says so. The word tongues, if you were to look it up in the Strong's concordance, would tell you it means language. The bible even gives us a actual event the gift of tongues was used. On the day of pentecost, the 120 in the upper room, all spoke in different tongues or languages. Did you notice how the people received the message? They all understood in their own language. In other words, the people heard the gospel speaking to them in their mother tongue.

Communication of the God and Angels: When has God throughout the bible ever communicated to us any differently then he does not now? Where do you find men and angels using a different language in the bible? I would like to know where do you find a new language of God and angels? I'll tell you this, there is no place in the bible that advocates that.

All throughout the bible God communicates to man in his language. for instance, How did Adam know that God was calling him, if God spoke one language and Adam spoke and understood another? Even today, that does not make sense. If I spoke english and another person spanish....could we really understand each other. The Gift of the tongues would allow me either to be able understand him or he understand me when we spoke.

Prayer to God: Do I have to have a special language to speak to God when I pray? No indeed. I simply just speak or sillently pray to myself.

Let me tell you this.....With every gift that God gives to the church...Satan has a counterfeit. God gives love..Satan gives lust. God gives joy....Satan gives pride... God gives the seventh-day sabbath....Satan gives Sunday....God gives the gift of tongues, which allows the person or people listening to understand when there is a language barrier ...Satan gives the gibberish like talking, where it is communication that no one even knows or very few know.

By the way, how do you know that what is being said is not cursing the very God you say you love? I asking you all to do a test. The next time, you go to speaking tongues session...take a tape recorder and make sure you getting it clear. Have someone who can understand it tell you what has been said. Then you will know whether its truth or error.

The purpose of the gift are to build up the church. Instead, this form of tongues destroys churches or people. This is not the manisfestation of the true Holy Spirit, because it only edifys the person speaking. Furthermore, the holy spirit reveals himself to us as the still small voice. Not by fire, not by hurricane...it was the still small voice that moved Elijah from his refuge.

Today that still small voice is still speaking to the hearts of men and women, if we only listen.

Maranatha.

Princess,

you are correct in that the Holy Spirit is given at your baptism. the Holy Spirit is not so force or power. He is the a person. He can speak to us and He teaches us. HE is God. Annais and Sapphira in Acts found out that you dont lie to the Holy SPirit..It cost them their lives. Peter said to them, YOU have not lied to men, but GOd..referring to the Holy Spirit.

Act 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
Act 5:4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

Paul and Barnabbas were called by the Holy SPirit. The Holy SPirit said"Separate Paul and Barnabbas, for I have a work for them."

Act 13:2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

He that is led of the SPirit of God is God. He that is not led by the Spirit of God is not of God.

Why did Jesus go out to the desert after his baptism? The SPirit of God led him out there.

Mat 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
Luk 4:1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

Princess the answers are in the bible. By the way, here is the promise of the HOly SPirit...JOhn 14:26 "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."

Maranatha.
