Square Dancing

I've recently been introduced to what the small, mountain community I'm presently residing in considers a good, wholesome activity; country square dancing.

My family has always been strongly against dancing (except perhaps that which is done in excited praise to the Lord, and married couples dancing), and I've been in agreement. However, I'd never considered square dancing.

Now I'm wondering if it may be one couples/group dance that isn't dishonouring to the Lord; or is it something that we should avoid because it can lead to immorality if people are not careful, and be a bad blot to the light that is to be shining forth from us? Is it something that weakens our witness of Christ to others? I'm all ears for some Biblical opinions on the matter.

Thanks so much! Katia

i personally do not see square dancing as a type of dance that would be erotic or sensually stimulating... but only you can really say if its wrong for you to do or not. Its one of those things like eating meat. Some people say its a sin and then there are people who say it is not. Even tho God has said you can eat meat some people still view it as "unclean." if its wrong to you, dont do it. If you can do it before Gods eyes and do so in liberty, enjoy.

I agree with Eddieb about square dancing not being erotic or sensually stimulating. If you take a respected male chaperone, no one should bother you for intimacy. But it is a social gathering and if you go alone, there may well be someone who sees you as available. But as long as you don't go off alone with anyone while at the dance, you will be pretty safe. At least its that way in my mountain community.

Even if it's married couples, I don't want anyone else holding my bride! We will be married 45 years this Sept.5th. There is always some one who likes to hold a woman a little to close, whisper something just a little to sweet. It's just not right! Too many are one thing on the outside, but a wolf in cowboy boots on the inside. If you love your man, let him do all the holding of his daring wife.

Dancing most of the time has booz, and most people are not Christians. Do your dancing at home by yourselves, and be as romantic as you want.

I can't see a problem with square dancing . It's very regulated and can be a family time as well . not slow hug her close stuff just plain good times ..Rev

Bro; maybe a chrch dance???? But I am a old fashion Baptist, drinking and dancing almost always to togther. Most holding a woman other than their wife have thoughts that are not good. If someone is going to be holding my wife, it's going to be me!
I have lived long enough and been with men of faih and their lust is not sometng I trust. Look at the number of men in ministry who everyone felt were so sexually pure, an they fell li a dead log. I don't trust many men, they don't know how to control their vesses or their sexual thoughts. takes real dedication to Jesus and the woman or man you are pledged to be faithful to.

Dancing wth other's just in my opinion is jut not right. If just one person takes it the slightest bit even in their mind as a lustful thought it' just not worth a risk. Satan uses anything he can cause prolems in marriage.

But maybe I am just an old fashion baptist who just ii too conserative for today's world.

Farout, not everything in the world is evil. I have seen in my life times where there is more evil in a church than in a square dance. But perhaps ppl are just more evil around you. This gal doesn't even mention that she is married. And not everyone's thoughts always revolve around lust, certainly not at a square dance in my area.

amen brother brad < sometimes we spend so much time looking for the non God aspect we miss good times we could have in the Lord , many times ive been in a bar drinking coffee and nothing else ! but Christ did the same thing i think by showing an example of living in the world but not being a part of it , as we seclued ourselves off we become of no good to any ,just in a bubble of our own ,,a good witness can be a just being there and showing how to have fun Gods way .if sin and lust already exists in us we will fall at the slightest wind and in that case avoid going past youre own doors posts.,,safety by exclusion !..Rev

I agree! Isreal's greatest fault was that they became so inclusive and despised those nations around them and wanted nothing to do with them, that they failed in bring the word of one true God to the nations. Its easy to see when Jonah despised the ppl of Ninevah, that he rathered they die, then repent and be saved, and the parable of Jesus about the good Samaritan showing the aloof nature of most of the "religious" jews. We are not to be of the world, but we are in it and we "are" to be the light of the world, not hide our light under a bushel.

I told my daughtes that you don't g to the Goodwill store looking for a mink coat. To my son I told him you o't finnd really fine chistian women at at bar. I think te same it istrue bot both men and woman looking for a husband or wife at at dance.

I think my time in the Navy and as pastorI got to see what most men are really like. Most men, even christian's have a mind of lust. Look at how many in ministry fall to sexual sin. My advice is men keep your heart pure, and women never let your guard down f one second. The most pure couple can in a monent of temptation make a mistake that will last a lifetime.

I was in the military as well, and I met many godly people while there, as many as I met in civilian life (remember what Jesus said about the centurion). But they were associated with churches and Christians, but they don't shun activity with non-Christians, its just that you don't seek to union with non-Christians. The poster didn't say she was looking for a non-Christian as mate. Although I see your concern, we cannot be the light of the world if we hide our faith, and our love of our fellow man. Christ loved them dearly, are we to do less?

Ok to a point ill agree. Let take a staement one step further not most men but all men can fall to lust and woman also ! The only thing that makes a differance is Christ in us , I never told my daughters where to find a good man that's Gods job alone since I pray for the right mate , but I did tell them to be conservative in dresss and not provoke lustful thoughts in others .one listens one did not the results speak the truth of the statment ! One married to a good man and one not married with issues ! I've Ben married to a Christian woman only to have it blow up when she quite God . Can't control that but can control the type of person you attraic and use Gods wisdom of the Heart and discernment for the rest . We should not be afrid to enter into any where if The Lord go before us .! ....but we must be willing to deal with temptaion no matter where we go ...Rev

The [appearance] of a "really fine christian" seems to depend on the market place more-so than its actual producer...

But In Luke 7:32-35 Christ talks about [Himself] eating and drinking and merry making, and offers His own opinion:

"Some shout "you should DANCE!"... some shout "you should CRY!"

Whats a 'Christian' to do?

Jesus concludes:

Luke 7:35 GOD's wisdom is shown to be true by all who accept it."

New Testament

(God`s wisdom) " Whether, then, you are eating or drinking, or whatever you are doing, let everything be done to the glory of God."
1 Corinthians 10: 31

For those who look to the Law, it even allows for such pleasures:

Old Testament

"...and exchange the money for anything you want - [meat], wine, other intoxicating liquor, or anything you please - and you are to eat there in the presence of ADONAI your God, and enjoy yourselves, you and your household."
Deuteronomy 14:26

Words closely associated with, or indicative of dance in scripture:
Rejoicing, Gladness, Joy, Mirth, Skip, Leap, Make Merry

Very good friend. That's my point to a "T". Even some married men have no loyality to their wives. I don't trust most men, no even christian men. Most mendo not know how to control their lustful thughts when they happen. And everyone gets lustful thoughts sometine in theeir life. 2 Thess. has a great deal devoted to this subject. No onne can tell dancing does not give worldly men ideas about sex. If someone thinks differenty they don't know how most men reay are. Anyone in counseling can tell you sex is on most mens ninds lot. We live in a culture that is saturated in sex from 1st grade. Our public schools begin teaching children very blunt sexual things at second grade.By fourth grade birth control is fully tught.

Time to see our kids are drownded in sexa a very early age.

You know, at first glance I thought, 'Now, what's so bad about square dancing?' But as I read through the comments, a picture began forming in my mind of all the hand-holding, hands around her waist, etc., and I remembered something that my abusive ex-husband said about square dancing. He said, (and I quote), "It's really fun because you get to hug all the women a lot. As much as you want. My girlfriend and I danced but I hugged a lot of others and it was fun." I'm not sure that all that physical touch is appropriate for a Christian. It could start a fire that you weren't even thinking about. It's such an area of temptation for so many. I struggle with these temptations myself as a single adult, and I don't square dance or go to bars. To the original poster, I think you should pray and ask the Lord what choices He wants you to make for fun and recreation and He will lead you the best way :) Your Father knows best. I think it was a good question and led to great discussion. God bless you in all of your endeavors, sister, and in all that you do in serious and in recreation/fun.

To those who see the evil in those around them, they will always find it. To those who seek the good in others, they find it as well. Choose well what it is you spend your time looking for.

Remember who is the ruler of this world. Perhaps you might be too trusting of those who are dressed in sheeps skins, when unrder is a wolf looing for a tender sweet lamb.

I don't wish to argue with you brother. I told you I understand your point, but I know in my heart that He who saved me is GREATER than the prince of this world. I just wanted you to understand that as well.
