Gossip and its serious effects
What effect can gossip have?
Bible reference: Exodus 23:1-9
Exodus 23:1: Do not pass along false reports. Do not cooperate with evil people by telling lies on the witness stand.
Gossip breaks down relationships:
Making up or spreading false reports, was strictly forbidden by God. Gossip, slander, and false witnessing undermined families, strained neighborhood cooperation, and made chaos of the justice system. Destructive gossip still causes problems. Even if you do not initiate a lie, you become responsible if you pass it along. Don’t circulate rumors; squelch them.
Bible reference: Proverbs 25:18-28
Proverbs 25:18: Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow.
Gossip is often more harmful and lasting than physical wounds:
Lying is vicious. Its effects can be as permanent as those of a stab wound. The next time you are tempted to pass on a bit of gossip, imagine yourself stabbing the victim of your remarks with a sword. This image may shock you into silence.

2 Thessalonians 3:11-12: We hear that some of you are living idle lives, refusing to work and wasting time meddling in other people’s business. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we appeal to such people-no, we command them: Settle down and get to work. Earn your own living.
Gossip wastes valuable time:
A lazy person who doesn’t work ends up filling his or her time with less than helpful activities, like gossip. Rumors and hearsay are tantalizing and exciting to hear, and they make us feel like insiders. But they tear people down. If you often find your nose in other people’s business, you may be underemployed. Look for a task to do for Christ or for your family, and get to work.
God's word on gossip
Gossip can go under other names-backbiting, slander, rumors, hearsay, tale-telling. At its best, gossip whispers dubious hints, repeats questionable information, turns the light on another person a few degrees to the left, or suggests wrongdoing without facts to back up the suggestion. Gossip is a sin, for it depreciates personhood, often trying to make someone else look bad so you or I can look good. God hates gossip. We should too.
The evil effects of gossip:
Leviticus 19:16 . . . Do not spread slanderous gossip among your people.
Gossip is specifically forbidden by God.
Proverbs 11:13 . . . A gossip goes around revealing secrets, but those who are trustworthy can keep a confidence.
Gossips make poor friends. Stay away from them. Gossips and trustworthy people work at opposite ends of the human spectrum. Trustworthy people build you up. Gossips are demolition experts, trying to tear you down.
Romans 1:29 . . . Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, fighting, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip.
God catalogs gossip with greed, hate, envy, and murder.
1 Timothy 5:13 . . . They are likely to become lazy and spend their time gossiping . . . getting into other people’s business and saying things they shouldn’t.
Gossiping often grows out of laziness. We have nothing better to do than sit around talking about other people. Then we wind up saying things we might later regret.
Matthew 7:1 . . . Stop judging others, and you will not be judged.
Gossip puts us in the place of judging others. In a court of law rumors and opinions are not allowed because they might unjustly sway the opinion of the jury. So it is when we turn our living rooms into courtrooms where we sit as judge and allow rumor and opinion to color and often damage the reputation of others who have no chance to defend themselves.
Proverbs 18:8 . . . What dainty morsels rumors are-but they sink deep into one’s heart.
Gossip hurts others. It also destroys your credibility if the gossip proves false.
How do I stop gossip?
Proverbs 26:20 . . . Fire goes out for lack of fuel, and quarrels disappear when gossip stops.
Stop the chain of gossip with you! When you hear gossip you can do something about it. You can decide not to spread it any further. Stop the fires of gossip from spreading beyond you.
Deuteronomy 13:12-14 . . . You must examine the facts carefully.
If you are not sure something is gossip, you must look carefully into the matter without assuming what you have been told is true. Go to the source and get the facts straight.
Matthew 7:12 . . . Do for others what you would like them to do for you.
The Golden Rule can also be applied to our speech-”Talk about others in the same way you would like them to talk about you.”
Ephesians 4:29 . . . Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.
If we focus on what is good and helpful, gossip will find no foothold in our hearts.
Colossians 3:8-17 . . . Whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of the Lord Jesus.
If you think you may be about to gossip ask yourself, “Does the person I’m talking to need to know this? Is it true, accurate, and helpful?”
Promise from God:
1 Peter 3:10 . . . The Scriptures say, “If you want a happy life and good days, keep your tongue from speaking evil, and keep your lips from telling lies.”
