The gifts of the Holy Spirit are supposed to be used mostly for the benefit of and building up of, the church. Discernment is one gift that is not only severly lacking in much of the church, but those that do have the gift to a significant degree is rarely believed when they use it. People in this age, either want it spelled out in scripture, or some scientist to inform them of something needing discerned. Lots of christians love scripture which is good, but without use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, even members of the church can be easily mislead by the evil one (as it says in scripture, that even the elect will be deceived).

Does anyone have examples (specific ones) of where people of the church are using supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit? I say supernatural, because still lots of christians that like to preach, exhort, and teach, so I dont include those.

All of the spiritual gifts are supernatural because they come from the Holy Spirit….who is anything but “natural.”
Are you asking about the “miraculous gifts”…..as in miracles, healings, prophesy, and tongues?

Dwelling on the mudane, like "proper" terminology and not actually contributing to a serious discussion only shows the deficiency in those who are members of the church. Either answer the question using the wisdom God gives freely to all who ask, or pls leave the discussion.

Folks are often and easily mislead by those claiming to hear from the Spirit.

People in this age, either want it spelled out in scripture,
GASP ! oh the horror, so what do you think is missing in Scripture ?

It is a perfectly valid question.

Good question.

I’m simply attempting to ascertain exactly what it is you are asking sir. I meant no offense. Wow.

If a man can convince a Pentecostal congregation the 'rapture really really is soon this time' He'll have a following forever and a bank account in Switzerland

Im one of those terrible spell it out in Scripture guys and I'd really like to see this explained , I think it presumptuous of you decide these things are not of the Spirit with out support.

Another who considers themselves intellectually superior. Answer the question or leave the discussion pls.

YES and in full accordance with scripture and apostolic doctrine ...
1Corinthians 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 And there are diversities of ministrations, and the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of workings, but the same God, who worketh all the things in all.
7 But to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit to profit.
8 For to one is given through the Spirit a word of wisdom; and to another a word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit:
9 to another faith, in the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, in the one Spirit;
10 and to another workings of powers; and to another prophecy; and to another discernings of spirits: to another kinds of tongues; and to another interpretation of tongues;
11 but all these worketh the one and the same Spirit, dividing to each severally even as he willeth.

As to myself personally I have prayed to exercise the gift of discerning of spirits when needed; and I have also enjoyed occasionally the gift of knowledge when peaching and witnessing; also I have exercised the gifts
of faith to work healings and miracles.

The question was a simple one, this is not a game to see if I can intellectually trap you into saying the wrong answer. Thats what many at this site do, but I despise it when I see it. May the Lord bring low those act more like pharisees than a simple man. Jesus chose simple men, it would pls me if you would simply answer the question instead of asking clarifying questions. If you thought I was trying to trap you with the "wrong" answer, I apologize, but thats very rarely the case here.

Thank you for actually answering my question. Do you attend church service? Have you used your gifts for the edification of the people of the church?

First off, I absolutely don’t consider myself “intellectually superior” to anyone here.

Secondly, I was just sincerely trying to determine SPECIFICALLY what spiritual gifts you were referring to. In scripture there at least 9 spiritual gifts…..some say as many as 14 that Paul discusses in Romans and 1 Corinthians. ALL are supernatural in origin as they are provided by the Spirit to work “supernaturally” to build up the church body.

I’m wondering if you really posted this to ask a question or if you simply came here to start an argument. I’m starting to lean towards the latter.

There's a list of spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12

To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.

In my church - and in my experience of churches elsewhere - the gifts speaking tongues, healing, miracles and prophecy get the most attention, words of knowledge and interpretation of tongues less so; and I can hardly think of a time when I've heard the gift of faith, words of wisdom or discernment of spirits talked about or exercised publicly.

That post was to Hitch. Again, you are not answering the question.

The "main" purpose of the gifts are for the building up of the church. Tongues dont, healing can if done in a church setting, same with prophecy. As for prophecy, those who do so are either believed whether its true or not, or wont believe it no matter how true it is. Like discernment, its not really a truly respected gift. What do you consider a word of knowledge? Like teaching?

Discernment of spirits is another gift thats either overly believed or ppl refuse to believe it when it is true. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are being treated very very poorly by many who claim Christ.

In the 1 Corithians 12 passage the gift of tongues is in the list of gifts given for "the common good" so Paul clearly viewed it as building up the church.

We use to "word of knowledge" to describe a situation where a person is given a supernatural insight to a situation "there's a person here who is struggling with an injured left ankle..."

Words of prophecy are taken seriously in our church. If a word is given in a church service, then together we reflect on it and discern its value. Sometimes a word of prophecy doesn't pick up much response, other times there are many similar and complementary words, visions and links to scripture that indicate the Spirit is talking to us clearly. Normally, somebody who wants to speak will have a brief word with one of the pastors before stepping up.

This is all mediated through fallible humans, so imperfect - but I believe this is the right general approach.
