We see the lineage of Jesus in three different places in the Bible.
Matt 1:1-16 ; Luke 3:23-38 ; and of course all through the old Testament.
Matthew was written mostly to Jews, who of course knew the Old Testament, and knew the requirements of the Messiah.
This is Mary's side of the family. The spiritual (Biblical) lineage of Jesus. It starts with Abraham.
Luke was written more to the Gentiles (primarily the Greeks) who were more interested the physical lineage of Jesus.
This is Joseph's side of the family. (Although Joseph wasn't Jesus' biological father). This starts all the way back at Adam. So Adam was a real person.
Matt 1:1 starts of with Abraham who we see in Genesis 17 through 21.
verse 2... Isaac is mostly in Genesis 21 through 24.
verse 2... Jacob Genesis 25 through 49
verse 2... Judah Genesis 29 through 49
verse 3... Perez is mentioned in Gen 38:29; Gen 46:12; Numb 26:20-21 also in Ruth 4 and a few places in 1 Chron.
Zerah is where things start really spreading out. He is mentioned in Genesis, Numbers, Joshua, and 1 Chron.
so on and so forth... some other notable descendents of Jesus are Boaz (mostly in Ruth), Jesse, and of course David the King (1 and 2 Sam, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chron) and Solomon the King (1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chron)
Interestingly enough the inscription above Jesus head said he was 'King of the Jews' ( Matt 27:37; Mark 15:26; Luke 23:38; John 19:19-21 )
He did have royal blood (obviously in more ways than one) and even claimed to be the King of the Jews. ( Matt 27:11; Luke 23:3 )
There were over 30 prophecies about the Messiah in the Old Testament.
I would like to talk about some of these.
