The Proven Character of Your Faith

1 Peter 1:3-9 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)

“3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you, 5who through faith are shielded by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

“6In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in various trials 7so that the proven character of your faith—more precious than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9now that you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”

To The Elect of God

This is being addressed to the elect of God, sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ. So these are those who, by profession of faith in Jesus Christ, should have died with Christ to sin and who are now obeying the Lord and His commands in life practice. For Jesus Christ, in His death on that cross, put our sins to death with Him so that we will now die to sin and obey Him and His commands in holy living. For He died to deliver us out of our slavery to sin so we will now serve Him with our lives in doing His will.

An Inheritance that is Imperishable

Now, many people hold on to this promise of an imperishable inheritance based off making a profession of faith in Jesus Christ only, but who never died with Christ to sin and who never obeyed God and His commands in life practice. This promise is not for them. For “faith” in Jesus Christ is not lip service only. The faith to believe in Christ comes from God, and not from ourselves, and it is a gift from God which requires that we deny self, die to sin, and obey God’s commands, or we do not have eternal life with God.

But it goes beyond just the initial reaction we have to faith in Jesus Christ. For faith which saves, which comes from God, and which is persuaded of God as to His righteousness, and our sinfulness, and of our need to deny self, die to sin, and obey God’s commands, is not a one time event which takes place in our lives, done deal. Our faith and our salvation from sin is progressive, and we must continue in those walks of obedience to our Lord until the time of the end if we want to be saved and on our way to heaven.

[Matthew 24:9-14; Romans 8:24; Romans 13:11; 1 Corinthians 1:18; 1 Corinthians 15:1-2; 2 Timothy 1:8-9; Hebrews 9:28; 1 Peter 1:5,9]

Suffering Various Trials

Now Jesus Christ told His followers that if we are following Him in obedience to His commands, and if we are walking in His ways in doing His will, that we will be persecuted as He was persecuted for the sake of righteousness. Especially if we are those who are following in His footsteps in taking the message of the gospel of Christ (the biblical gospel) to the people of the world, we will be hated, mistreated, and falsely accused of wrongdoing or of teaching a “false” gospel which they falsely call “works salvation.”

But suffering is for our good, to grow us and to mature us in our walks of faith in obedience to our Lord. Although suffering is definitely not pleasant, and it hurts to be mistreated by others, especially by those closest to us, still it works good in our lives if we respond to it in the right way and if we let it teach us and train us to be godly, to love God, to obey His commands, to do what He says, and to become who He created us to be, by His grace. For the purpose of suffering is to refine us in character to become more like Jesus.

The Goal of Your Faith

As was mentioned at the beginning of this, our salvation from sin is not a one time event which takes place in our lives and now we can live however we want because heaven is now secured us for eternity. We are saved (past), we are being saved (present active), and we will be saved (future) when Christ returns for His faithful bride, provided we continue in Christ, in walks of obedience to His commands, and no longer as slaves to sin until the end. Sin must no longer be our practice, but obedience to our Lord must be.
