Speaking another language is a wonderful gift from God. If you haven't received that gift yet, pray to God and He will bless you in speaking in tongues.
Mar 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
Act 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
It's not groanings as such, speaking in tongues is speaking another language.

Speaking in tongues was needed to preach the gospel to people who could not understand the apostles native languages. If the apostles did not speak in tongues then the listeners could not have understood or heard the message. Speaking in tongues will be done before Christ returns in order to preach to gospel to the entire world. There are countries that a majority of the people have not heard of about God and the people in those countries will need someone to preach the gospel before Christ comes (Matt 24). So be looking for some of Gods people to be doing some of these great exploits in the near future.

Thank you for correcting me. I did not completely look into the subject. A limited view is not the complete case. I did some research and will change my thoughts on a few ideas but the overall thought I posted was VERY paraphrased. I have just researched some more and found some more information. Here we go... IS "SPEAKING in tongues" the BIBLE evidence of the baptism with the Holy Spirit? Is this "baptism" for us today? What is the biblical teaching about"TARRY MEETINGS"? The most important business of this life is the receiving of the true baptism with the Holy Spirit. But how few, today, understand what that baptism really is! Your eternal salvation depends on it!Let us come very humbly, prayerfully, to a study of this all-important subject.
It is one fraught with prejudices on both sides. Let us remember that the Holy Spirit is, first of all, the Spirit of LOVE -- of PATIENCE -- of TOLERANCE. So let us, if possible, come to this study, each admitting that he may have been wrong, and very humbly, prayerfully, seeking instruction from GOD out of His
Word. And let us see this study through to the end. Salvation means, simply, the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the very LIFE of God. Jesus said: "That which is born of the flesh is FLESH ... Ye must be BORN AGAIN" -- born of God's Spirit! "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, IF SO be that the Spirit of God dwell IN YOU. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, HE IS NONE OF HIS ... But IF the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead DWELL IN YOU, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall ALSO quicken your mortal bodies BY HIS SPIRIT THAT DWELLETH IN YOU (Rom. 8:9, 11). Unless, then, we have received the Holy Spirit, God's Spirit, God's LIFE, to dwell within us, we are LOST -- utterly without hope of eternal life! Surely, then, the receiving of the Holy Spirit is the most important business of this life! But what is the difference between "receiving" and being "baptized by" the Holy Spirit? Is PENTECOST Repeated in This Day? Let us, then, look prayerfully and without prejudice into God's Word. Are the accompanying MANIFESTATIONS that took place on the day of Pentecost -- immediately following Jesus' ascension to heaven -- for us today? Many people assume that they are -- and that the method of receiving this experience or "blessing" is to attend modern "tarry meetings." And that the only "Bible evidence" of the "baptism of the Holy Spirit" is "speaking in tongues." On this assumption many would stake their lives! So let us EXAMINE the original manifestations of that day, as described in the Bible, and SEE whether they are being repeated today. Perhaps a real surprise awaits us. Let us not ASSUME -- let us PROVE ALL THINGS as God's Word instructs. The only record of that tremendous occasion is preserved in Acts 2:1-13. Let us carefully examine every incident that occurred that day.
1) "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place." Are the "Pentecostal" people of today who believe "speaking in tongues" in harmony and "one accord"? No, they are split up into many fragments and segments, over disputes among themselves.
2) "And SUDDENLY there came a SOUND from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind." Notice that on THAT day there was a SOUND. Not a sound made by the people, but this sound came FROM HEAVEN. It sounded like a violent windstorm. Have you ever seen THIS part of the manifestations repeated today? Then notice, too, that this sound -- the Spirit which caused them to speak with tongues -- came SUDDENLY. But today we see these people start to "work it up" GRADUALLY. Sometimes they twist, and jerk, and chatter and mutter, repeating certain phrases over and over, until they work
themselves into it. But on THAT day, the Spirit that filled those disciples came FROM HEAVEN, and suddenly!
3) "And it [the sound] filled all the house where they were sitting." Do sounds coming, not from people's throats, but from heaven, fill THE WHOLE HOUSE where people are assembled today?
4) "And there appeared unto them CLOVEN TONGUES like as of fire, and it SAT UPON EACH OF THEM." Divided, flaming tongues APPEARED -- they saw them! They came and sat upon each of the disciples! Has any man living witnessed such a manifestation in this day?
5) "And they were ALL filled with the Holy Spirit." Surely no one has ever heard of a modern "Pentecost" meeting where ALL were filled, all at once, at the same time, SUDDENLY, when the Spirit came with a great SOUND from heaven!
6) "And began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." Ah! Here, at last, some will be sure to say, is a manifestation repeated today! But wait! On this original day of Pentecost, ALL began SUDDENLY to speak in these OTHER languages. Now what kind of tongue-speaking was this? Was it UNKNOWN tongues? Was it the kind that needed an interpreter? Was it like we see demonstrated today? Let us examine and see! Verse 5 tells us there were dwelling in Jerusalem at that
time devout Jews out of every nation on earth. Word of this momentous experience went like wildfire over the city. A multitude of these Jews came rushing to the place. They were amazed. They marveled. Why? Because that:
7) "EVERY MAN HEARD THEM SPEAK IN HIS OWN LANGUAGE"! These
Jews, from all nations, UNDERSTOOD what was said! Some were Parthians. Some Medes, Elamites, dwellers in Mesopotamia, Rome, Arabia, etc. And they said, "And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?" Now notice carefully. Every man heard THEM (Acts 2:6) speak in HIS own language! These disciples were all speaking in tongues -- OTHER languages -- the languages of EVERY NATION under heaven. And EVERY MAN who came rushing in heard THEM -- the disciples -- speak in HIS OWN LANGUAGE! The Parthian heard THEM, ALL of them, speak the Parthian language. But the Mede heard the SAME disciples speak the language of the Medes. Those from Greece heard the entire number of THEM -- speaking Greek. THEY UNDERSTOOD what was said! The gift of "tongues" spoken of in the Bible is the ability to speak of God in other languages -- languages that are foreign and previously unknown to the speaker. Have you ever witnessed an experience like this? Have you ever heard THIS kind of "tongue-speaking"? Can you even find a description, in all the Bible, where this same kind of
manifestation occurred at any other time? True, they spoke with other tongues when the Holy Spirit first came upon the Gentiles at the house of Cornelius (Acts 10). And in telling the apostles of it, Peter said, "The Holy Spirit fell on them, as on us at the beginning," and, "God gave them the
like gift as He did unto us" (Acts 11:15, 17). But it is not recorded, nor did Peter say, that the Holy Spirit at that time came SUDDENLY from HEAVEN, like the SOUND of a windstorm, appearing as divided tongues of fire, or that men of different languages each understood all of them in HIS own
language. Aside from being filled with the Spirit and speaking in tongues, the nature of which is not here described, there is no similarity between these two experiences. It is true, too, that in one other recorded case, and one ONLY, men spoke with tongues upon being filled with the Holy Spirit. That was when Paul had baptized the Ephesian believers and laid his hands on them (Acts 19:6). But there is nothing to indicate similar accompanying manifestations as upon the original day of Pentecost. So what must we conclude? The Pentecostal accompanying manifestations are not being repeated today? But if not, WHY not? Are they not available for us today? No, they surely are not! We have no word of condemnation for these "Pentecostal" people, as they call themselves, because they are unable to
repeat the same accompanying manifestations as described for the day of Pentecost in 31 A.D. That will NEVER be repeated again. It never occurred before, and it never will again. I could keep going but if this goes on many may not "endure until the end"

The speaking in tongues occurs only 3 times in the New Testament. It is vastly overused and is called "the least of the gifts" by Paul In I Corinthians. You must follow the rules given by Paul if they are to take place. It has become mainstay in some churches these days, and the rules are definitely not always followed. I am not at all confessing that speaking in tongues should never occur, but I attend a fundamental, Protestant church, and its pretty strictly non-charismatic. It seems very easy to go to church for some kind of emotional experience with God, and that in itself has some problems attached to it. Of course when we worship our Creator, there is an emotion that comes from our hearts, but it really needs to be kept in check. I know, I know, you all think I am crazy, but some churches have taken this "emotional" experience to a new level. My question would be, what happens to that emotion when you are leaving the parking lot at church and someone pulls out in front of you? It goes right out the window so to speak, and turns into an emotion that is not Godly. A Spiritual Plumb Line is what we need. A well balanced worship that doesn't get too emotional one way or the other.

Well you hit that right on the button Apologist.
I didn't go to church today, but my husband did, when he came back, he said he was queuing up for something and was in a line, but 4 people who just came out of the 8am service jumped the queue, my husband was flabbergasted. What did these people learn from that morning service, nothing.
Speaking in tongues is for today, I use it privately in prayer, which is between my Father and me. No man has taught me to speak in tongues, I prayed for it and God blessed me with that gift.
I thank you Father for that gift. :star:
This thread contains a mixed bag of beliefs and thoughts regarding the Baptism in the Holy Ghost, and speaking in tongues. Many are posting from a human and natural point of view. Not having known this mighty experience, of the Baptism in the Holy Ghost.

Please tell me where in 1 Corinthians Paul calls tongues "the least of the gifts". In 1 Cor 14:5 he says "I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather you prophesy." This instruction is proper and should be followed, but that doesn't mean that tongues is a lesser gift. Prophesy is for the edification of the church, tongues is for personal communication with the Father in words furnished by the Holy Spirit under terms of Romans 8:26, which says "We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express." These gifts are equal in importance, but they have different purposes.
In 1 Corinthians, Paul is speaking to the Corinthians about proper procedures that should be followed during church services. He was not reducing tongues to the status of being the least important of the gifts. Note verse 26 of Ch 14: "....When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church."

You are probably thinking that nothing in Romans 8:26 speaks of sounds being uttered in an unknown language. I would respond by asking, "How then is it that Paul says that the Spirit utters groans (sounds that humans hear and recognize) that "words cannot express."

I Corinthians 14:19 New Living Translation: "In a church meeting I would rather speak five understandable words that will help others than ten thousand words in an unknown language"
That is a clear indication that this is the least of the gifts. It edifies you and God alone, but not the church, especially if it doesn't have an interpretation.
The use of tongues, again, is vastly overused in this society, and like I said in another post, leads to one thinking that there is a varsity team and a JV team. If you don't speak tongues, you are relegated to the JV team. It is clearly indicated to be something that is controlled within worship, and that should never be used without an interpretor.
That is wrong. That is NO indication at all that it is "least" of the gifts. You are completely misunderstanding Paul. He simply was clarifying that if others do not understand [no interpretation] he would rather speak 5 words only so that the listeners do understand. This has absolutely NOTHING to do with calling it "least of the gifts".

And that is why when we speak in a different tongue we need to make sure that we interpret
(explain) what we said to those who do not speak of that tongue. 1 Corinthians 14:39 Says;

and yet, they all were understanding what was being said, even though they new not the languages {the tongues} they were speaking in.
There were many different nationalities there,too. All with their own languages.
But everyone {every nation} understood what was being said, as if it were being said in their own language,
whether it was the apostles speaking - or- just people in the crowd that were listening.
It was as though it were but one language spoken, for they all understood what each other was saying. And, it was a gift given to the apostles, from The Almighty GOD, through Jesus Christ.

i was addressed by some one yestarday she spoke in tounges, while she was saying it i was shaking and sweating and the top of my head was tingling and my palms were burning, ive met this amazing group of people they have all the elements of the church of christ, the women even wear head scarves to show modesty. they could tell things as well, and they said so many blessings for me, my heart is wanting to go to them its so strange..

There are many dialects that sound like babble to me and I need someone to interpret and it is the same with the spiritual gift of tongues or why else would there be a spiritual gift of interpretation.
