What is Pleasing to God

1 John 3:21-24 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)

“21Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God, 22and we will receive from Him whatever we ask, because we keep His commandments and do what is pleasing in His sight. 23And this is His commandment: that we should believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and we should love one another just as He commanded us. 24Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God, and God in him. And by this we know that He remains in us: by the Spirit He has given us.”

According to God’s Will

If we are truly in Christ, by genuine biblical faith in the Lord Jesus, and so our lives are surrendered to the Lord to doing His will, our prayers will also be in alignment with His will. In other words, we are not going to ask for anything we know is not in accordance with His will, and that is against His will. And where we are not certain of what the Lord’s will is in a particular situation, then we should just pray for His will to be done. And we should trust Him with the results, and not take matters into our own hands.

Keeping His Commands

So, what is the criteria for us to not have our hearts condemn us? It is that we keep His (New Covenant) commandments and that we do what is pleasing in His sight. Sin must no longer be our practice (habit), but now obedience to our Lord and to His commands is to be our practice. We are no longer to willfully, deliberately, and habitually sin against our Lord. But now we must be motivated and determined in heart and mind to know and to do the will of God He has for all of our lives, and for us individually, as well.

Belief in Jesus

And what does that look like if we believe in the name of the Son of God, Jesus Christ? Well, first of all we must understand that biblical faith is not of human flesh, of our own doing, but it comes from God, it is authored and perfected by Jesus Christ, it is gifted to us by God, and it is persuaded of God as to His righteousness and holiness, and of our sinfulness, and of God’s requirements that we deny self, die to sin daily, and walk in conduct according to the will and purpose of God for our lives, in obedience to Him.

[Matthew 7:21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 1:12-13; John 6:44; Acts 26:18; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Hebrews 12:1-2; Titus 2:11-14; 1 Peter 2:24]

Biblical Faith

Biblical faith in Jesus Christ is not in words only. We can’t just say we believe in Jesus and now all our sins are forgiven us and heaven is now our eternal destiny. Biblical faith is in action, and with purpose, the purpose to submit to Christ as Lord of our lives and to follow in His ways and to do all that He commands we must do. We must no longer obey sin. For if sin is what we obey, it results in death. But if obedience to God is what we obey, it results in sanctification, and its end is eternal life with God (see Romans 6:1-23).

Love One Another

Now this love is not just human love, but it is agape love which comes from God and which means to prefer what God prefers which is all that is holy, morally pure, upright, honest, faithful, and obedient to our Lord and to His commands. So this love is going to have God’s interests at heart, and not selfish self-serving interests. So when we love with this kind of love we are going to do for others what is for their good as God calls good, and we will even love and do good to our enemies. And we will not sin against them.

Whoever Keeps His Word

Now this is not what is popularly being taught today in the majority of what is called “church.” But whoever keeps (obeys) God’s commandments are those who remain in God, and God in them. All who profess faith in Jesus with their lips only, but who do not do the will of God, but who continue in deliberate and habitual sin against God, they do not know God. And many are going to hear God say, “I never knew you. Depart from me you workers of lawlessness,” because they refused to submit to obedience to God.

As the Deer

By Martin J. Nystrom
Based off Psalm 42:1

As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You

You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
