When I was very young in the Lord I knew Jesus (God) had come to this earth in the form of a man. He took upon himself flesh and bone just as we are. We know Jesus was tempted just like we are yet without sin.
Heb 4:15 For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities;
BUT WAS IN ALL POINTS TEMPTED LIKE AS WE ARE, YET WITHOUT SIN.
The Bible tells us that God can NOT be tempted with evil, so how could this be if Jesus was God in the flesh ever be tempted?
Jas 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for
GOD CANNOT BE TEMPTED WITH EVIL, neither tempteth he any man:
We must always remember that Jesus emptied himself to be made like men who could be tempted. Jesus in the form of a man was still God yet he did not rely on his divinity to carry out His Father's will.
Php 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
Php 2:7 But
MADE HIMSELF OF NO REPUTATION, AND TOOK UPON HIM THE FORM OF A SERVANT, AND WAS MADE IN THE LIKENESS OF MEN:
Here is a very interesting scripture that sheds more light about temptations.
1Co 10:13
THERE HATH NO TEMPTATION TAKEN YOU BUT SUCH AS IS COMMON TO MAN: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
All temptations come to the part of man that is common to us all. What do all men have that is common to us all? All men have a “
human” nature, but not all men have a
“divine” nature. Only born-again children have a divine nature, and a human nature. Our divine nature is Jesus Christ in us.
Gal 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless
I LIVE; YET NOT I, BUT CHRIST LIVETH IN ME: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.
KNOW YE NOT YOUR OWN SELVES, HOW THAT JESUS CHRIST IS IN YOU, except ye be reprobates?
The “divine” nature in us can never be tempted to sin because God can not be tempted to sin!
1Jn 3:9
WHOSOEVER IS BORN OF GOD DOTH NOT COMMIT SIN; for his seed remaineth in him: and
HE CANNOT SIN, because he is born of God.
Even though Christ in us can never sin, the human nature of man can! When a person gets
“born-again” they receive a new heart (new spirit). Born again by the incorruptible seed of the Word of God through the Spirit of God. Our physical body stays the same which is corruptible with sin. The Apostle Paul said.
Rom 7:18
FOR I KNOW THAT IN ME (THAT IS, IN MY FLESH,) DWELLETH NO GOOD THING: for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good I find not.
Rom 7:19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
Rom 7:20 Now if I do that I would not,
IT IS NO MORE I THAT DO IT, BUT SIN THAT DWELLETH IN ME.
After Jesus was baptized by John he (Jesus) was led into the desert to be
“tempted” by the devil. After 40 days of not eating the Bible says, “Jesus was hungry”
James the brother of Jesus said this in his epistle....
Jas 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, God neither tempteth he any man:
Jas 1:14 But
EVERY MAN IS TEMPTED, WHEN HE IS DRAWN AWAY OF HIS OWN LUST and enticed.
The word, “
LUST” here means,
“STRONG DESIRE”. It can be associated with anything evil, or good.
You can have a
"strong desire" to do good and the devil can try to stop you from doing it, by causing you to move in a way in which God is not leading.
Jesus spoke about a time in which people will say unto him, "
Lord have we not prophesied in your name, and in your name cast out devil and do many wonderful works?"
Jesus tells them,
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord,
HAVE WE NOT PROPHESIED IN THY NAME? AND IN THY NAME HAVE CAST OUT DEVILS? AND IN THY NAME DONE MANY WONDERFUL WORKS?
Mat 7:23 And then will
I PROFESS UNTO THEM, I NEVER KNEW YOU: DEPART FROM ME, YE THAT WORK INIQUITY.
These things in themselves are not bad, in fact, Jesus said these things (works, signs) would follow those who
"believe". (Mark 16:17-18) Jesus said these works are
"iniquity". If the Lord did not lead them into doing them. These people said, "...
.Lord, did WE not do these things...". Righteousness is what God does through a person, not what (WE) people decide to do on their own when "
WE" decided to do them!
Jesus had a
“STRONG DESIRE” to eat food!
Luk 4:2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he
AFTERWARD HUNGERED.
The very first “temptation” of Jesus came as he had a "
strong desire" to eat.
Luk 4:3 And the
DEVIL SAID UNTO HIM, If thou be the Son of God,
COMMAND THIS STONE THAT IT BE MADE BREAD.
Luk 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
Jesus's divine nature in him did not need to eat any physical food to stay alive, but his human body needed food to stay alive. Bread alone is not enough to sustain physical life. Jesus was being
"tempted" by being
"ENTICED" to do something outside of what His Father was doing. Remember Jesus said that he only does what he sees his Father doing and that he only speaks what he hears his Father say, for the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he does.
Joh 5:19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you,
THE SON CAN DO NOTHING OF HIMSELF, BUT WHAT HE SEETH THE FATHER DO: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
Joh 5:20
FOR THE FATHER LOVETH THE SON, AND SHEWETH HIM ALL THINGS THAT HIMSELF DOETH: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
Joh 14:10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?
THE WORDS I SPEAK ARE NOT MY OWN, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. (NLT)
Jesus's second temptation was to cast himself down from a high place so His Angels would catch him from harm thus proving to the onlookers he really was the Son of God. Jesus had a
"strong desire" to prove himself to be the Son of God.
Mat 4:5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple,
Mat 4:6 and said, “
IF YOU ARE THE SON OF GOD, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’”
Jesus had a "
STRONG DESIRE" to prove he was the Son of God, but not by jumping from the top of the temple in Jerusalem. The only person who can reveal who Jesus truly is was His Father. As it says in scripture, "Let another praise you and not your own lips"
Pro 27:2
LET ANOTHER PERSON PRAISE YOU, AND NOT YOUR OWN MOUTH. Let someone else praise you, and not your own lips. (NirV)
Jesus asked.....
Mat 16:15
HE SAITH UNTO THEM, BUT WHOM SAY YE THAT I AM?
Mat 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said,
THOU ART THE CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD.
Mat 16:17 And
JESUS ANSWERED and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona:
FOR FLESH AND BLOOD HATH NOT REVEALED IT UNTO THEE, BUT MY FATHER which is in heaven.
What Jesus said was what His Father said to him in response in his temptation.
God the Father had made a way of escape for His Son Jesus!
Jas 1:14 But
every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust (strong desire), and enticed. (emphasis added by me.)
1Co 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but
GOD IS FAITHFUL, WHO WILL NOT SUFFER YOU TO BE TEMPTED ABOVE THAT YE ARE ABLE; but will with the temptation also MAKE A WAY TO ESCAPE, that ye may be able to bear it.
Mat 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again,
THOU SHALT NOT TEMPT THE LORD THY GOD.
God the Father spoke through his Son.
Jesus's third temptation was to worship the devil and that would have created a shortcut to restoring the kingdom of this world, and its glory to its creator! Jesus had a “
STRONG DESIRE” to destroy the works of the devil and to restore back to man what God had given him in the beginning.
Luk 4:5 And the
DEVIL, TAKING HIM UP INTO AN HIGH MOUNTAIN, SHEWED UNTO HIM ALL THE KINGDOMS OF THE WORLD in a moment of time.
Luk 4:6 And
THE DEVIL SAID UNTO HIM, ALL THIS POWER WILL I GIVE THEE, AND THE GLORY OF THEM: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
Luk 4:7
IF THOU THEREFORE WILT WORSHIP ME, ALL SHALL BE THINE.
God the Father again gives Jesus a means of escape by Jesus speaking what he heard His Father say.
Luk 4:8 And
JESUS ANSWERED AND SAID unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written,
THOU SHALT WORSHIP THE LORD THY GOD, AND HIM ONLY SHALT THOU SERVE.
Mat 4:11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him
.
We have more insight into how Jesus overcame the devil when he was being tempted.
Not only did Jesus speak what he heard his father say (which is how God the Father provides us a means of escape), but Jesus also did this.....
2Co 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds
2Co 10:5
CASTING DOWN IMAGINATIONS, AND EVERY HIGH THING THAT EXALTETH ITSELF AGAINST THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD, AND BRINGING INTO CAPTIVITY EVERY THOUGHT TO THE OBEDIENCE OF CHRIST;
The weapons God provides us when being tempted are not of the flesh, but a mighty "
sword' of the Spirit that the devil can not stand against!
We normally don't think that temptations can come when we have a strong desire to do good. They can and do come and the devil is right there to try to get to you wander off on your own based on your own will and not the will of God.
Sorry for such a long post.
