'... Give us this day our daily bread ...' Matthew 6:9
Continuing our breakdown of the Lord's Prayer, today we smell baked bread. What's Warburton's thin sliced got to do with heaven? Jesus said, 'Give us today our daily bread'. Bread is the cornerstone of a healthy diet because it has the basic ingredients to keep us going. Here, Jesus is referring to our spiritual loaf; without God's ingredients we will starve or get sick. The word 'daily' means we can't live off yesterday's slice - we need a fresh batch of God every day.
The disciples would have worn a wry smile when Jesus mentioned daily rations of bread. It would've reminded them of the story of the Israelites wandering in the desert in Moses' day. God had provided croissants from the sky to His desert gypsies, but they were warned not to keep any in their breadbins. If they did, the croissant would sweat from heavenly taste to hellish slop. It was a lesson in being completely dependent on God day by day. Is this what Jesus is hinting at? To pray complete dependence on God?
What now? It's very important to remember that the beginning of a day brings in a new start. Make the best of that, no matter what the day before looked like.
