Should Christians Do Yoga?
By Laura Bagby

Laurette’s Story: Sucked into Yoga and the New Age

Laurette first got involved in yoga as a little girl. Her mother used to give free yoga classes to the college students, and Laurette was the demonstration model. Laurette loved being the center of attention, so yoga was fun. In addition, the exercises really relaxed her mother.

But Laurette warns that yoga’s ability to bring a sense of calm is one of its deceptive charms: “That’s one thing people look at, too,” said Laurette. “They say, ‘My doctor, my chiropractor, my physical therapist says to do it. It helps me. I feel less stressful.’ Well, it wouldn’t be a hook if it didn’t have something good in it.”

Yoga also fulfilled a spiritual need in Laurette’s life. Though her family went to church, Laurette says she never heard the message of salvation preached there.

“We didn’t know about living the victorious Christian life,” she explained. “We were not aware of the deception that is inherent within yoga and its connections to Hinduism. It seemed so spiritual, so it was fulfilling a void that was in our lives. I have found that any part of our lives that is not submitted to the lordship of Jesus Christ is an open door for the enemy. … As I look back, that was the open door to the New Age for us. We began getting into Edgar Cayce, Ouija boards, crystals, and all kinds of things.”

PraiseMoves: The Christian Alternative to Yoga

Laurette remembers keenly the day God brought her the idea for PraiseMoves™. She says it was February 25, 2001 at 10:35 a.m., and she had just finished working out to a Denise Austin video. Laurette was contemplating in prayer an idea for a form of exercise besides aerobics that wouldn’t be yoga but that would be gentler on her 40-something body. “I thought that something would involve stretching and praising and moving and Scripture, and suddenly the idea of PraiseMoves™ came.”

For the next two years, Laurette prayed about the idea and put it together. The foundational Scripture for PraiseMoves™ is 1 Corinthians 6:20, which says, “You were bought with a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”

PraiseMoves™ postures are stretching exercises with an accompanying Scripture verse. “Every posture in PraiseMoves™ is tied to a Scripture, so that while we are stretching and strengthening the body, we are also being transformed by the renewing of our mind, nourishing our spirit, and praising the Lord,” said Laurette.

As you do the strengthening posture, you are supposed to think about the correlating verse. For instance, there is a posture called the vine, a pose that strengthens the spine and arms. The matching Scripture verse is John 15:5, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”

Just how important is it for the Christian to incorporate Scripture into daily living, even into such mundane endeavors as exercise? Well, for Laurette, the Word of God has been the key to a transformed life.

“I look at how my life has changed over the years since I turned my life to Christ,” she said, “and it was really after I made a conscious decision to memorize Scripture, to get it on the inside of me, to begin to allow myself to be transformed by the renewing of my mind on the Word of God, that I really noticed a tremendous change in my life.”

Laurette believes that as Christians we should view exercise as something that can and should be godly. After all, the term “godly fitness” is part of the title of her latest book. What exactly does godly fitness look like at its most basic level?

“Whatever we do, we do as unto the Lord by focusing on Him, by realizing that this is not a cult of the body. I am not trying to get my body to look a certain way to meet the world’s standards. I want to be a fit witness for Him,” Laurette said

The exercises are not intriniscally evil but it can lead you into the theology and then you can get into demon posession/oppression depending on your spiritual state.

Yoga is a part of the Hindu religion, each body form represent or connects the person to one of their Gods. I think it would be alot better for us to do alternatives, no matter what level of spirituality we're at.

1 Timothy 4:1 (KJV)
1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils

yoga is bad for christians. which doing yoga people empty there minds totally which then leaves room for satan to get in.

it seems harmless enough but personally I have doubts about anything that started off rooted in other religions. If in doubt, throw it out!

it's roots are in hinduism though; thats the issue I have. Also you can't just state your opinion as fact. In terms of exercise and muscle build up calisthenics is more efficient anyway.

I love that...can I use it

When in doubt throw it out...I'll use these for the guys.

Ok first of all Yoga is a exserize and its not like your tying to worship a nother God there is only One God I dought God thinks your doing Yoga for a nother religine I mean if your meaning it in that way then he will no but if your doing it to help exerize or somthing I dought God is going to be all like oh he is worshiping a nother God....

I can find videos for you to watch that might change your views.
I grew up among Hindu's and muslims, I dont speak just from book knowledge but first hand observation.

There are alternatives to yoga, I'm sure there is physical benifits, but to subject your spirit to unclean spirits is not worth it.

Please read the articles within this thread.
God bless

I didn't know that it was a bad thing. My friends were just talking about it actually and i didn't know that it was. Very interesting. I don't think have ever done yoga, but i may have without knowing it was bad.

Sure, nothing wrong with Yoga if you do it for the right reasons (exercise). I also heard of people who do yoga and meditate on a verse, or do yoga while they are praying.

YOGA cannot stop us from exercising

I didn't know yoga was part of a false religion and I did yoga in school this weekend.I think of it as a good way to stretch your body.

I exercise regularly. Before I start my exercise, I do warm up via stretching exercise.............by doing so, many will say, we are doing YOGA. And some religious folk, will say trust only in God and paint a picture that you are indulging in foreign God. Lines are drawn who is holy and who is not holy in many similiar discussion.

I think all these has taken too the extreme. For those believers who do stretch exercise and love Jesus, believe in Him. They do stretch exercise purely as a warm up exercise. But they are not a supporter of foreign God. But many will have war smokes coming out when they here one is doing stretch exercise that are similar to YOGA exercise. They give the impression, we are an elite group that cannot do this and that, just because false God has perverted the exercise of stretching as a warm up to proper exercise. We all know that streching exercise is good for your body and it keeps you from getting hurt when you go into serious exercise. They all give the impression you are not faitful if you do stretch exercise.

All this is unnecessary and paints a picture our God is smaller than false god. THis is not true.

My only advise if those who are so religiously drawing lines, they should likewise stop worship and singing priase to our true God. Because, Satan is Lucifer and he was the chief worship leader in heaven before he felt. Can those who paint our God is a small God, use their logic to stop themself from worshiping our true God. NO NO and NO.

The same is true if you practise strech exercise............and like it or not, all form of strech exercise is found in YOGA.

Oh I forgot to let you know that I am not promoting other God. I only believe in Christ and He is the only one that can help us in all type of situation. I only feel sad that many believers, box ourselves up not to do this and that for the wrong reason.

Reason that it will profane us. It will cause us to be non righteous, it will mean we will be disrespectful to God. I believe, exercise and stretch exercise is good and Is not against Christ. He does not mind us doing them. And He is said that he made us RIGHTEOUS by dying at the cross, but yet, we say that just doing stretch exercise, He is unable to make us RIGHTEOUS anymore.

Rom 5:17 For if, by the trespass of the one, death reigned through the one; much more shall they that receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, even Jesus Christ.
Rom 5:19 For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one shall the many be made righteous

Notice, we have His GIFT of righteousness. Those who promote to abstain from stretch exercise, because it is link to YOGA, is saying that His GIFT of RIGHTEOUSNESS is not good to make us RIGHTEOUS. Our Stretch exercise is bigger than his GIFT of RIGHTEOUSNESS.

How can Stretch exercise is stronger to make us un- RIGHTEOUS?

Yoga!

My understanding is, if you don't practice any of the religious symbolism associated with it, it's ok!

I know a Christian who teaches martial arts, but does not teach the religious symbolism associated with it!

Emily, I like your approach...............DO it , enjoy it and get God involve.'

Kids in public school are learning yoga. According to yoga instructor, Mark
Blanchard, (of Progressive Power Yoga, he taught children at Colfax
Elementary school in California this past November. On his blog, he states:
"I will be introducing yoga to all of the kids at the school as I donate a
full yoga program." Blanchard has been featured in many magazines such as
Family Circle and Seventeen and has trained many actors and actresses (like
Jennifer Lopez and Drew Barrymore). Blanchard plans to "bring Progressive
Power Yoga to as many places as I can around the states (as well as the
globe) in the coming year."

Part of Blanchard's plans include working with Mini Yogis Yoga for Kids. On
the Mini Yogis website, they list not only Blanchard's company but many
other organizations as well, many of which are schools like Happy Land
Preschool in Culver City and St. Monica's Elementary School in Santa Monica.

Yoga for kids is on the rise, and if your child attends public school, you
may want to check to see if they are teaching him or her yoga. A program
called YogaEd provides yoga classes under the heading of "health/wellness"
programs for schools. Those programs take place in several states including
California, Colorado, New York, Washington and Washington, DC.

Parents whose kids are in Christian schools may need to be concerned too.
More and more churches and Christian organizations are opening their doors
to the practice of Yoga. And the biggest Christian publisher, Thomas Nelson,
published a book titled Yoga for Christians earlier this year. It's just a
matter of time before kids in Christian schools will be learning Yoga and
eventually the art of meditation.

This is of great concern for me.
I have a precious 5 year old Great Grandaughter who has no training from her parents on things of the Lord.
GreatGrandma has to do that....me!
Madigan has been placed in a gymnastic class and I have noticed the last couple times she has been with us, a sober, and frail look on her face, not seen before.
She loves Sunday school, and said to me that she did ask Jesus into her heart.
I do know also that her Mom ,out of jealousy will try to make lite of that, and get her involved with the things of the world to draw her away.
Her Mom,and Dad are now going through a devorce which makes it worse.
Where we use to have Madigan 3 days a week, her Mom only allows one day now.
I'll be asking some questions about this class, and praying with Madigan.
I would ask for your prayers also.
This precious little girl wants to know Jesus, but being filled with the lust of the world from her parents.
God, I pray you put a hedge of protection about this little one. Keep her from evil, I pray in Jesus name. Amen

Talking with Madigan, she has told me, Grandma, none of the kids I go to class with believe in God, but she said, "I do!"

Again, I ask for prayer covering over these little ones who are being inundated with the gospel of satan, that God will make himself known to them, for greater is he that is in us ,than he that is in the world.
