I didn't want to intrude, but in seeing the below, I had to clarify it a bit. For the Catholic Church does see it as being a little more then how you describe it, and that only Priests are allowed to give it.
To simplify it as you have, is really to diminish what the RCC promulgates. This makes for an interesting read on Transubstantiation.

those practice has been going on since the beginning, even during the time of the Apostles in the example of the road to Emmaus where Jesus broke the bread and blessed it, and there are other examples in the Acts of the Apostles of the same tradition.
