Can a true Christian sin or not?

@Dovegiven, @Life,

I stand on what I read and understand scripture to teach like everyone else.

You believe: “In Christ there is no room for "dual citizenship" spiritually.”

I believe this to a degree also. But I believe believers are dead to this world as Christ has told us; this is the reason why we have no dual citizenship. If a believer is dead to this world how can they sin? Which would make them a citizen of this world if they did. Sin is of this world. If a believer sins they have a dual citizenship. There is no sin in the body of Christ (1Joh. 3:5, 9). If we walk in this world in an unfruitful manner, God is not remembering our sins because He is not imputing sin in this New Covenant promise. God will be merciful to our unrighteousness by not remembering our sins (Heb. 8:12; 10:17). We are in this world, but we are not of this world. We are citizens in Christ having been raised with Him.

Col 3:1 If you then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God.

Col 3:2 Set your affection (Gr. exercise your mind, entertain or have a sentiment or opinion) on things above, not on things on the earth.

Col 3:3 For you are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

If we are risen with Christ, as 1Cor. 15:17 teaches, we are not in sin and cannot sin.

If it is true with Jesus, then it is true with believers. If it's not truth with Jesus, then it is not true with believers.

As Jesus is, so are we in this world spiritually, not fleshly (1Joh. 4:17). Is Jesus Righteous? So are we in this world. Does Jesus sin? So are we in this world. Will Jesus come and judge sin when He returns? No!

Hebrews 9:28
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him (through faith) shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

G399 (bear)
anapherō
From G303 and G5342; to take up (literally or figuratively): - bear, bring (carry, lead) up, offer (up).

(GW) Likewise, Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of humanity, and after that he will appear a second time. This time he will not deal with sin, but he will save those who eagerly wait for him.

(HCSB) so also the Messiah, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him.

(ISV) so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people. And he will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly wait for him.

Jesus has already taken away our sins and He will not judge, deal with, or entertain sin anymore.

The question then would be, what about those believers that sin? God is coming without sin to judge His church which is sinless.

1Pe 4:17 For the time is come that "judgment must begin at the house of God": and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

1Pe 4:18 And "if the righteous scarcely be saved," where shall the "ungodly" and the "sinner" appear?

Mat 13:41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and "they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend," and "them which do iniquity";

I believe that there is a need to repent or risk being left behind when the Bridegroom comes, but to convey that a believer can never sin is to make a believer give up abiding in Him because he had sinned.

1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1 John 2:1My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

So this is about running that race in living as His disciple in how we live this reconciled relationship with God thru Jesus Christ when we look to Him to help us lay aside every weight & sin by walking in the light with Him as He has done.

Hebrews 12:1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

1 John 1:3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. 5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

You need to be careful about how you project yourself as if you never sin since you beware saved because then you sow doubts to believers that have been saved when they slip up & sin.

I need to be careful not to convey that it doesn't matter in how they live their lives when they are saved BECAUSE it does matter in that the Father will chasten every unrepentant child of His; by leaving them behind at the pre great trib rapture to receive stripes per the measure of knowledge they had failed to prepare themselves with His help for the Bridegroom ( Luke 12:40-49 & Hebrews 12:1-29 ) When there is weeping and gnashing of teeth, it is no wonder that God has to perform a miracle for all those saints resurrected after the great tribulation because like Esau... who gave up his broth right for a meal and the prodigal son for giving up his inheritance for wild living, there will be a loss so keen that God has to wipe the tears from their eyes to get past that loss; that damnation as it is a damnation for never to be a vessel unto honor in His House, but forever a vessel unto dishonor in His House. Only God can stop them from crying over that loss.

So it is not a small thing; that loss of inheritance in the kingdom of God; and although they can never lose their salvation, they can never get that inheritance ever again once the Bridegroom comes and they find themselves left behind, but they will be present with the Lord even in death, and they shall be resurrected in a glorified terrestrial body to serve the King of kings from various places all over the world as priests and kings for the coming generations out of the millennium reign.

The vessel unto dishonor are in His House to testify to the glory & power of God in salvation for all those that believe in Him, even in His name; yea.. even as He still abides in former believers as promised in 2 Timothy 2:10-13 Read that.

@Christ4Ever,
I used this verse (Heb. 7:26) incorrectly when I replied to Sue. Normally I look up the definition of words, but when I read the word "US" in the verse I considered it clear in its meaning, but I was wrong. "US" is talking about Jesus Christ. I thanked Sue for pointing that out to me. I did initially used this verse as believers were Hight Priest.

@Dave M,
"You asked me: When a person who has been a habitual sinner all his life and has done nothing for no one his entire life and right before he dies he gives his life to Jesus and is saved, do think he will have the same reward waiting on him in heaven as the missionary who lost his life for Jesus and devoted his entire life to helping others."

I don't see that scripture speaks specifically on the subject of "rewards" excepted for Matthew 20: Every man shall receive the same reward according to Matthew.

Matthew 20:8
So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
Matthew 20:9
And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
Matthew 20:10
But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
Matthew 20:11
And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,
Matthew 20:12
Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.

this scripture you posted is about salvation not rewards my freind

The person who is saved on his deathbed is as saved as the person who's lived a wonderful life all his life. However, there's Somewhere in Scripture that talks about 'crowns' a person will receive in heaven. The crowns are pertaining to what that person has done during his Christian walk. Believers are given 'talents' -gift of the Holy Spirit' to be used in the context of the local church.

The subject of "duel citizenship" of the believer -- we Are living in this world Until we get to heaven. A born-again believer is looking forward To their final home in 'heaven'. We Could have been taken to our new home with Christ as soon as we accepted Him as Savior. But we haven't been. We Are to be in this world as a shining light for God. Some of us do a better job than others. But the idea is to be living a life that will attract others To Christ instead of Away from Him. And we all have different personalities / backgrounds. And satan is alive and well here on earth to distract us as much as possible.

This morning in Sunday School we've been in the book of James -- our tongue amongst other things. The teacher is married and has two teen-aged kids. Said he'd gone through a stage in life using very bad language -- he was convicted of that and made a deal with his kids / wife. When they heard him swearing, they were to tell him and the Dad would pay them each time he was 'caught'. He said it took him about a week and then his language was much better. But he commented that it's the little things that we need to be watchful with -- because it's the little things that can become Big things to deal with.

Sometimes people are trying to be so heavenly minded that they end up being no earthly good.

We Do live in this world -- so I'd probably suggest that we Do have 'duel citizenship' to some degree. We live here, earn a paycheck here, raise our family here. And are Trying to follow God's Word while here.

@Dave,

When the bible talks about rewards it talks about Heaven or Hell. God is no respect of persons. A person with a disability cannot do as much as another. A person with a low I.Q. cannot reason as well as others. A person that became saved 15 years ago has more knowledge than a person that was saved a year ago. A human being doesn't determine their birth or their death. They don't predetermine from a babe the struggle of this life walk. It s not their wisdom of Righteousness as if they've done some great feat before God. It's God that works in us "BOTH" to will and to do of HIS good pleasures; not self.

These laborers in "Matthew 20"are willing vessels to do God's will. Scriptures teach we are laborers together with Christ. Our labor is of Love. We love God first and our neighbor second. The laborers in "Matthew 20" were going out into the vineyard working in obedience to Christ. The vineyard is within ourselves as we are in this world. We have been told to make clean the inside of ourselves and the outward man will be also clean. As we learn this we can be led of God to do His will. We have been told to put off the old man and renew our minds and put on the new man who is after Christ.

James 2:5
Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

Col. 3:24
Knowing that of the Lord you shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for you serve the Lord Christ.

The reward is the inheritance of Eternal Life.

@Sue,
You've spoke many positive things.

A dual nature means you are alive to both natures. If you say you are alive in the flesh, you would be saying you are not alive in the spirit. You cannot be alive to both natures. This is a faith walk. You call the things that God said as though they were. You may not understand fully but if you step out in faith and say what God's word says, He will open your eyes in what seem blurred to you.

Romans 8:9
But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

If you have the Spirit of Christ you do not have a dual nature. Christ said He has quickened you making you alive from your sins and flesh nature.

Colossians 2:13
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

Ephesians 2:1
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

If you are alive in Christ you are dead to sin.

Ephesians 2:5
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

When the bible talks about rewards it talks about Heaven or Hell

very wrong brother, salvation is a gift not a reward if it was a reward you could work for it

rewards are the treasures we store up in our account in heaven by doing works here on earth and we are added are subtracted due to our work

@Dave,
If you say salvation from sin is a gift I would agree.
If you say salvation unto Eternal Life is a gift I would disagree.
Can you confirm that salvation unto Eternal Life is a gift and not a reward?

You said:” very wrong brother, salvation is a gift not a reward if it was a reward you could work for it”

Scripture says:
Rev 22:12
And, behold, I come quickly; and my "reward" is with me, to give every man "according as his work" shall be.

G3408 (reward)
misthos
Apparently a primary word; pay for service (literally or figuratively), good or bad: - hire, reward, wages.

Jesus tells us to store up treasure in heaven and he tells us how he will reward us for doing certain acts here while on earth, we know he is not speaking of salvation because we can not earn our way to heaven. There is no way someone will earn salvation by any of the things mentioned here in scripture in reference to rewards

note we posted at same time maybe rewards has more then one menaing in scripture here is what I am speaking of

Matthew 6:19-21
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

1 Timothy 6:17-19
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

Luke 12:33-34
Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Luke 6:35
But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.

Matthew 6:6
But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Matthew 6:4
So that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Matthew 6:16-18
“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

@Dave,
We as believers understand Eternal Life through Abraham’s actions. Abraham could not work for salvation from sin, but scripture shows that he did work for salvation for Eternal Life.

@Dave,

“Reward” is what we receive when Jesus come for His Church (Rev. 22:12).

The Holy city (New Jerusalem) and everything in it is the reward and the treasure that we are storing up in Heaven for ourselves. If we “do” “works” of obedience we will overcome.

Rev 21:7 He that over-comes shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

G3528 (overcomes)
nikaō
From G3529; to subdue (literally or figuratively): - conquer, overcome, prevail, get the victory.

Overcoming is a work and a believer's responsiblity because we are fighting against Satan's spiritual influence to keep us from loving. I know you know how difficult it is to truly love according to Godly Love. Keeping the commandments of Jesus Christ; this is a work. We are not required to do physical work for Christ that is temporary.

Heb 5:9 And being made perfect, Jesus became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

Below is the rewards and treasures we will receive in Heaven. Read the complete chapter of Revelation 21.

Rev 21:21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.

Rev 21:24 And the nations (people) of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honor into it.

Your Scriptures:

Matthew 6:19-21 – It saying store up for yourself a deposit, wealth

G2344 (treasures)
thēsauros
From G5087; a deposit, that is, wealth (literally or figuratively): - treasure.

Every reward below is: paid for service” or “repay” or “recompense.”

YOU WILL BE REPAYED FOR YOUR WORK.

Your scriptures: (YOU MADE MY POINT FOR ME)

1 Timothy 6:17-19 “They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, “thus storing up treasure for themselves

Luke 12:33-34 (YOU MADE MY POINT ME)
Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Luke 6:35 (YOU MADE MY POINT ME)
But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.

Matthew 6:6 (YOU MADE MY POINT ME)
But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Matthew 6:4 (YOU MADE MY POINT ME)
So that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

G591 (reward)
apodidōmi
From G575 and G1325; to give away, that is, up, over, back, etc. (in various applications): - deliver (again), give (again), (re-) pay (-ment be made), perform, recompense, render, requite, restore, reward, sell, yield,

Matthew 6:16-18 (YOU MADE MY POINT ME)
“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

You are being paid for your service in these scriptures. Working love is a service of Christ that we must do.

@Dave M @regibassman57

This kind of encapsulates it.
Gift:
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10

For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23

Too often we seek to earn our Salvation instead of being appreciative of it and so obedient to His will in our lives. This is probably why we have so many unhappy servants in the Body of Christ. Be joyful in His service and those who see this and don't know Him, will ask us why we are so happy! I was dead, but now am ALIVE! What???? Do you hear that door opening in them? Jesus is waiting.

Christ4Ever,

Scripture teaches:

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

When we understand Eternal Life, we understand it through the receiving of the Holy Ghost. This is the Gift and this is Eternal Life. We cannot work for the Gift of the Holy Ghost. However, it is received by faith and maintained through faith.

Faith is believing and acting on the words of Jesus Christ in obedience. Love is the obedience we’ve been commanded to abide in. If a believer does not abide in Love, they cannot obtain Eternal Life. Jesus is the embodiment of Love.

Joh 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
Joh 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

This is one scripture you presented in Ephesians 2:10:

Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

The good works are works of Love. Developing the character of Love in a believers responsibility (Eph. 4:22-24).

Luk 10:25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted Jesus, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Luk 10:26 Jesus said unto him, “What is written in the law? how read thou?

Luk 10:27 And he answering said, “Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,” and “with all thy soul,” and with all thy strength,” and “with all thy mind;” and “thy neighbor as thyself.”

Luk 10:28 And “Jesus said unto him,” you have answered right: this do, and “you shall live.

Without faith, love cannot be developed. Without love Eternal Life is not obtained.

Jam 2:5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

Jam 1:12 Blessed is the man that "endures temptation": for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life,” which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

1Jo 3:18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but "in deed and in truth."

@Christ4Ever,
These verses are traditionally taught they’re talking about Eternal Life. What convinces you that Eph. 2:8-10 is talking about Eternal Life?

Okay, as far as Ephesians 2:8-10, I guess I should have included the preceding verses as seen below as well. However, I perceive that the implication to you is that these verses in Ephesians do not speak to an Eternal life. Though to me they do.

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved ) And hath raised [us] up together, and made [us] sit together in heavenly [places] in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in [his] kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:5-7

For to be quickened in the present tense with Christ and in the ages to come implying a future, speaks to those who are reading his words in the church of Ephesus and himself of what if not Eternal life?

Depends on how you mean "obtain". If you mean it as to "acquire it" then no, but if you mean to "secure it". I can be convinced. For the same reason I believe that one can walk away from it. I'd prefer the word "prevail". For then I acknowledge that God has allowed us to share in the Victory of Jesus.

When we speak of gift regardless if you keep it, never open it, or throw it away. The recipient has nothing to do with the purchasing or to whom it is given.

@Christ4Me,

Though I used the term “obtain,” that was not the term used in scripture. The term scripture uses is, “inherit” eternal life. The term “inherit” is used in the sense of acquiring it. We already have the promise of Eternal Life by faith, but we must lay hold on to it through faith.

1Ti 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou are also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

1Ti 6:19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

The scriptures I’ve presented in my last post should clarify even more. We know faith without work is dead. We as believers express our faith through our works. Love is expressed through works.

I would still like your thoughts on Eph. 2:8, 9. What is your scriptural evidence these verses are taking about Eternal Life?

Webster Dictionary: (inherit)
: to come into possession of or receive especially as a right or divine portion and everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters … for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life

The only way we can acquire Eternal Liife now is in manifestation. Yes, we now must acquire it through obedience.

Heb 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

@Christ4Ever,
I didn't see the post I asked for Eph. 2:5-9. Sorry!
Yes, the context is not about Eternal Life, but the context is about being saved from sin; not Eternal Life.

@Christ4Ever,
Starting from the first verse it begins the conversation about sin.

Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

But as you see we are quickened together with Christ. Without the removal of sin, there is no Life. Ephesian 2: 5 teaches what we are saved from.

Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)

Abraham's sins were not imputed unto Him because of his faith not his works. But Abraham could not receive the promise of Eternal Life (which is the Son promised him) without his works (Gen. 22:16-18) (Gen. 26:3-5).

Rom 4:3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
