You're a blessing!
Thank you. We all bring something different to the table, one is no more saved than the other but, I do hope we all can agree that the Lord gets all the glory because of his divine plan and works and none of ours! Your a blessing!

YES YES YES! I agree with that - It is NOT by our doing but the Lord that gives us the ability for HIS plans :)

Who wouldn't want to let God in on everything they do???? We're all so quick to pick up the phone & enlighten a girlfriend or guyfriend, husband or wife know what our bowling average is, how many RBI's we got in the game they missed, how delicious a meal was at a friends house or when we closed on our first house so why NOT kick back & talk to God like a best friend , husband or wife??? I feel terrible when I mess up in all honesty. My head hangs low & I just feel down & almost grey. Like wow, I messed up & I feel bad about it. SO WHAT if God already knows, I want him to hear it from ME because I want a personal deep loving relationship with my dad.
LordKnows - You have a way with words! This is what I was trying to say when I said we should want to ask for forgiveness. If I do something wrong against my wife (OK, I forgot to take the garbage out again!), or sister, or friend, I want to apologize to them and ask for forgiveness. Not because I have to, but because I want to. It should be even more so with God! Awesome post! :-)

I think we are in agreement then. Since it won't keep you out of heaven, then you don't need to. You should - but you don't need to. Your salvation isn't dependent on it. I'm not suggesting that you don't ask for forgiveness after you sin. Quite the opposite.

I think we're all splitting hairs over the difference between need and should, including me. Probably should just say God bless at this point and move along! :);)
Perhaps but le me ask you this John.......if a sin that is not repentant thus limiting what God can do for you and limiting what His word will be able to do for and through you and limiting your prayer life to null and limiting your faith or the power there of but wont keep you from heaven so it is now a should ut NOT a Need to. Does that seem smart to you brother ?
Blessings

Yes and they were nailed with him on the cross!
Yes and you still had to ask. A future sin may be nailed on the cross with Jesus brother RJ - However unless you Repent which is asking Him to forgive this sin ......Then That SIN STILL HAS POWER OVER YOU AND YOUR LIFE. Things just do not happen automatically just because you are born again, no sir there is protical to be followed and if not followed then you have given the devil right in that situation and limit what God can and will do in the situation.
You have no free pass

Nope. That is why I said that we SHOULD ask for forgiveness when we sin. Actually, my exact words that you quoted were - "I'm not suggesting that you don't ask for forgiveness after you sin. Quite the opposite."

I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to keep in close contact with God... That thought just rattles my brain sometimes. The God that wakes us up every morning & knows every single tiny thing about us & we tend to treat him like a second class citizen at times. Just doesn't sit right with me. He died on the cross for past present & future sins so it's all good in the hood? We don't need to acknowledge our mistakes & keep it moving? Nahhh, I'm gonna have to shake my head at that idea. That's when you get the "Once saved always saved" garbage. I'll just keep on admitting my wrongs & rights for that matter & thank God for each & every beat my heart beats.

Let God impress upon you what sin is. In your life through Holy Spirit, and confess iit, once you know. Repentance, i.e. turning away from the direction you were walking in---your hiccup---and walking in the direction the Jesus is going was already done.

Are you claiming some formulaic response to your sin? LordKniws has said it well---that in an intimate relationship with the Father, we talk about it. We admit a sin, we agree with Him about it and let Him comfort us and in effect, He wraps His arms around us and off we go.

Not in the sense He won't forgive us or we've lost our salvation. However, out of reverence and respect for His mercies, we should confess and repent. We acknowledge our wrongdoing and turn away. It's about our sanctification, holiness. Can we live a sanctified life becoming like Christ without confessing our sins?

PS: I didn't read all the posts here so I'm sure someone probably brought this up already.

For the life of me, I don't understand those who adamantly say that we HAVE TO ASK for forgiveness, when we ALREADY HAVE IT. Ask? Really? Would God withhold it? According to 1 John 1:9, forgiveness is always on tap. The mere suggestion that we must ask lest we walk in unforgiveness is like a child in a loving family asking if he may please come inside and have supper...because the truth is that his parents' house is his and supper is always ready for him with a place for him at the table. That's grace.

What if we don't though? If I sin at 4:00, and I die at 4:05 before I have had a chance to ask for forgiveness - or if I just forget to, then what? Saying that we need to ask for forgiveness over & over & over implies there is a consequence if we don't. I completely agree that we should ask for forgiveness. Myself, I know that I feel bad after I have sinned, and I want to ask for forgiveness. Almost as soon as I realized that I have just sinned I feel terrible until I have gone to God and apologized. As Christians, we should feel this and ask for forgiveness because we want to, not because we have to.

That won't happen if our heart is right. If we do sin, but our heart is still right toward God He will do with us as He did with David. He will allow us a chance to repent, to change our direction and to make it right. If our heart is wrong and we are out of time then we will likely find ourselves with Cain and Esau... and with King Saul after he had been rejected as King of Israel by God...

As we get closer to God, our sin becomes more evident. Who can get closer to God and not see ones own imperfection?

We ask pardon. Lest we ever take for granted the great sacrifice needed to cleanse us from the very sin that continues in our life. With His Mercy, Grace, along with the renewing of our minds. These occurrences in our lives should be lessened while the increase of Christ in us continues to grow driving all else before Him.

So, just because asking forgiveness isn't required of us, doesn't mean there are no reasons for doing so.

Amadeus, I was in no way implying that we should not seek forgiveness. I was only disputing the word "need". Believe me, I ask for forgiveness so much during the course of a day that sometimes I think I must be a lousy Christian for needing so much forgiveness. I think Christ4Ever said best exactly what I was trying to say - "So, just because asking forgiveness isn't required of us, doesn't mean there are no reasons for doing so."

However unless you Repent which is asking Him to forgive this sin ......Then That SIN STILL HAS POWER OVER YOU AND YOUR LIFE.
Possessing a repentant heart is definitely the mark of a true Christian @Wired 4 Fishen and sins that you are aware of can instill a need of forgiveness but , I have asked this before and shall ask again:
  • do you repent perfectly for every sin and do it 24/7 for every day of your life?
  • How do you repent for sins you don't see
no sir there is protical to be followed
Yes sir, please provide scripture for such protocol
You have no free pass
Never said, I had a "free pass" on sin but I do believe I have no control over the consequence of my sin whether I see it with a resulting repentant heart or, are completely unaware of it.
You need to stop, if you think , for one millisecond that I do not have the need for confession. You can never go back and find where I said: Do not confess or, there is no need for confession. Quite the opposite, from the time I wake up I am in a constant state of confession. Not precisely and always to a Pastor or another brother but, more of a private confession to God as a form of an agreement with him. But, never do I do it to gain or seek his forgiveness, for something he has already provided. Rather to come in agreement that I am still sinful and in need of his son in me.
Psalm 51:17 The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.
Romans 8:1 Therefore, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ......(nothing to do with one continually asking for forgiveness.)

Yes sir but you also said in bold above that if it does not keep you out of Heaven then you dont need to.
Our salvation and life in Christ is much more then our salvation or doing just enough to keep our ticket open. lol
It is obeying His commands or another words living in such a way that is pleasing to Him and that is living as His word shows us. Therefore in doing so we must strive to walk upright before Him and be His love in this earth. We can not do this if we have open doors to the enemy and shut doors to what God can do in our lives or through us. So it is a Need Too Bro - that is if you want to be pleasing the Father.
:)

Especially when sin as simple as unforgivness of others can hinder your prayer life anf faith and God moving in your life. That is big if you ask me.

RJ if I know I sinned in some way then yes I repent and ask to be forgiven. If things seem to be going in the wrong direction or not as they were then yes I pray and seek where I am missing it and correct things as it is shown.

You ask me for scripture to back me saying there is protical to follow . My answer is NO Sir, kingdom law is protical. The way God says to live is protical. If you for example have ought against any then it is sin and hinders your prayer life. You may have to forgive 50 times in a day but that is ok for you are striving to be willing to rid that sin.
