Just a little History.
In Jewish Culture, Slaves of peoples houses often decided to stay with the Family they were serving after their time in slavery was up. When the slave decided to stay on and serve his Master, the Master would pierce his ear.
Ex 21
2"If you buy (B)a Hebrew slave, he shall serve for six years; but on the seventh he shall go out as a free man without payment.
3"If he comes alone, he shall go out alone; if he is the husband of a wife, then his wife shall go out with him.
4"If his master gives him a wife, and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall belong to her master, and he shall go out alone.
5"But (C)if the slave plainly says, 'I love my master, my wife and my children; I will not go out as a free man,'
6then his master shall bring him to [a]God, then he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him permanently.
The Word in greek for this type of voluntary slave is Doulos. This is the Word Paul uses to describe Himself at the beginning of epistles.
Romans 1:1
1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God—
Phil 1:1
1Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,
To all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers[a] and deacons:
Some have speculated that because of this relationship, Paul himself had one of His ears pierced as an act of committing himself to Jesus.
Also, the place I got the name. =)
