That statement in the TwinCities link that a person had to swear an oath before he could participate in the Purpose Driven Life small group study was not in the book or the study guide. Nor was it mentioned by the group leader in my group. That may have been the product of one small group leader's crazy thinking, but, it's not in the book or the study guide.

The only thing I was speaking on is just the books half baked presentation of the gospel and nothing else.
So I share this verse in exiting the door.

Psa 74:5 A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.
Psa 74:6 But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers.

James 4:11-12
11Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 12There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?

discretion and discernment in listening to the word of God

1Jn 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

It is different than judging.
Are u judging me ophel?

The book does not even apply the standard of the above verse. Will you speak on that and that alone?

And not just your opinion? Please.

Do you not think that I know exactly what I say from the word of God boomerangs off of people in regard to their love of a man and not of the love of the word of God?

Jesus says in Joh 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

Worshipping the Father in spirit and in truth cannot happen apart from salvation. Of necessity, salvation has to come first because Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (Jn 14:6 NIV)

My point exactly throughout this whole thread!

We believers are to judge each other for righteousness--not the world. But criticizing is a malicious act. The discernment I have been given sees gossip and criticism and perhaps bitterness and envy at the core of any critical word against a strong and fruitful brother in the Lord.

Rather than cast aspersions, Christians need to be quiet and pray, if they have concerns. Ask God! I did!

But aren't you disregarding your own advice concerning your statements to Shipwreck? It seems to me you are criticizing him for criticizing Warren.

Do you know Shipwreck outside of this forum to know if is or isn't a strong and fruitful brother in the Lord? How well do you know Warren?

Something to consider here is exalting someone by flattery is in many cases more dangerous than criticizing them. Pride comes from pleasant words not criticism.

Just a few things to consider .

We are to stand for righteousness. When a brother persists in criticizing or gossiping about another brother, we are to stand up and correct.

We are all subject to correction in our lives. It is not perceived as pleasant words, is it? But in an open and teachable heart it is accepted with humility.

Something else to consider.

Proverbs 15:32
If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself;
but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding.

2 Timothy 4:2
Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching.

I see you want to correct me but not Ricks book presenting a false plan of salvation that differs from the word of God. Now I really dont understand you..

Did you ever hear whats good for the goose is good for the gander or are you playing judge, partiality. You are presenting to us as your the voice of God when you say its so.
Rick or me or Joe or Bill or Mary or anyone is not above the word of God.
Did you ever hear of false bretheren?
did you ever hear of false gospel?
Did you ever hear a lot of people who went to church are in hell because they believed a false Gospel. Please I beg of you wake up and get on the right high horse according to the full counsel of God and not your counsel.
If I was to preach a false gospel and my brothers and sisters did not tell me so that would be a crime in itself.
If a father told one son to tell the other son a command and the son told the other son that command how would it sound if the second son said "Your criticizing me"
We are supposed to sharpen each other not condemn. the only thing I tried to do is to condemn the false gospel presentation in the book. But it looks like your on the warpath to condemn me.

You wrote 2 Timothy 4:2
Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching.
That does not mean you preach any gospel as what that book presented but the Gospel of Christ, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST!

So I ask for forgiveness for having offended you. Please forgive me Ophel.

Rick Warren knows the plan of salvation. He lives and walks with Jesus Christ. His life is an exemplary example. It appears that the infectious dis-ease with one particular brother in Christ has spread. He is not false, but those who infect others with their brand of criticism are. I must warn those who do this sort of thing, that the only answer to what they perceive as false is to pray--not condemn.

The book in question does not promote any false gospel. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ.

Yes, I have been offended for my brother in Christ. I forgive you, and I know he does as well.

Well we seem to see things differently.
Do you know either Shipwrecksoul or Warren personally?

Ophel, officially correcting other members of the forum is not the role of a member of TalkJesus, it is the role of the moderators. If you think that Shipwreck is spreading an unscriptural message, click the Report Post link in the upper-right corner of the screen on the offending post, explain the issue, and let we moderators do our job.

In any Christian forum we will see this sort of topic discussed. What makes this any different? It isn't for moderation to determine the truth, but for us as individuals to seek the Word and His truth regarding those He has raised up as bright lights, and those who are self-lauding false believers.

May God reveal to you and me his will for us.

I will always defend a brother or sister in Christ who is being maligned. That is what Jesus would do.

If people have negative opinions about another Christian who is in the public eye, then those holding those opinions should pray about that, asking the Lord to reveal the reason for it, then seek the answer in the scriptures as to whether or not the person fits the description of a false teacher such as described in 2 Peter 2.

Then, if fully convinced that the person is an enemy of the cross, then have nothing to do with him but ask the Lord to bless that person with His presence and change him or her. Simply maligning the person does nothing but rile feathers and stir controversy.

About The Purpose-Driven Life:

To know why you exist, The Purpose Driven Life explains you must first know the One who created you and the five purposes for which you were created. You were...

  • planned for God's pleasure (Worship)
  • formed for God's family (Fellowship)
  • created to become like Christ (Discipleship)
  • shaped for serving God (Ministry)
  • made for a mission (Evangelism)
Rick Warren believes:

ABOUT SALVATION

Salvation is a gift from God to man. Man can never make up for his sin by self-improvement or good works – only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can man be saved from sin’s penalty. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith.

So practice it yourself first, humble yourself and quit criticizing those who don't like Warren. Normally I would just leave it at that and expect this discussion to rest but in this case I don't see that happening so thread is closed for now.
