Speaking in Tongues: Required for Regeneration?.

While the gift of tongues is a good gift, it is not given to all born again believers, and it is not a gift a born again believer must possess in order to be regenerated from above or required as proof of regeneration.

Those that teach and preach that speaking in tongues is a REQUIRED sign of regeneration from above are not teaching the whole counsel of God's word, are not rightly dividing the word, are deliberately wresting God's word to their own destruction, and are no different than the pharisees of 2000 years ago who accused Jesus of blasphemy when HE healed on Sabbath.

Paul clearly says not all will receive the gift of tongues: "4There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills." 1 Corinthians 12:4-11.

Those of you who truly speak in a tongue gifted to you be the power of the Holy Spirit, hallelujah - praise God. But don't let it make you think that you're brother or sister in Christ who has a gift other than tongues is not as equally gifted and regenerated and saved.

You're saying it is error If a denomination or so-called Christian group has a STATEMENT OF FAITH that says: "the evidence of speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance is for ALL believers"?

Raised in the AofG i never heard the governorship of the church say tongues was necessary for salvation. But boy did plenty of the members let it be known it was. One being my grandma.

The Revival Fellowship is a conservative pentacostal church (some have called it a cult), and it teaches that the outward manifestation of all baptised persons filled with the Holy Spirit is to be found in the experience of "speaking in tongues".

Is this church also in error?

They believe the infilling and the baptism of the Holy Spirit are two different things, two different events.

So they do NOT believe speaking in tongues is required for salvation. They just believe it is required as evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

The title of this thread says "regeneration". I'm not entirely sure what that means... is it like reincarnation?

As Paul wrote in Titus 3:5 "according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit," You claim to be Christian born again by the power of the Holy Spirit. Why do you toy with such things such as regeneration? Are you actually a Buddhist, a Hindi, Jaini, or Sikh? Seriously, brother.

Were the 120 believers in the upper room saved before they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
Was Cornelius saved before he received the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
Was Paul saved before he received the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
Were the Samaritans in Acts 8 saved before they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
Were the disciples at Ephesus (Acts 19) saved before the received the baptism of the Holy Spirit?

All believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father, the baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire, according to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church. With it comes the enduement of power for life and service, the bestowment of the gifts and their uses in the work of the ministry.

In fact no one in the Bible received the baptism of the Holy Spirit at the initial moment of Salvation.

There is of course John the Baptist, who had the Holy Spirit "from his mother's womb". But he seems to be the only exception.

First of all, your scriptural references and argument for two separate baptsing events is forgetting one crucial point: God is present in Three Persons, and neither can be separated from the other.

The baptism with the Holy Spirit occurs the moment a person is saved by trusting in Jesus as savior and Lord. The Holy Spirit indwells the believer instantly and is not a second experience following conversion.

When we are born again, we are given everything in Christ, including salvation; we are complete in Him. We lack nothing.

Can we desire tongues or other gifts?, Certainly, we can and we should fast and pray for more spiritual gifts, but not receiving the gift of tongues at baptism is not to be interpreted as not having received the Holy Spirit.

The Assemblies of God does not accept the doctrine of “Eternal Security” and in particular the “once saved, always saved” extension of that teaching. At the same time, “eternal insecurity” (any idea that one must be saved over and over again, or is always at risk of losing their salvation) does not accord with Scripture or with Assemblies of God belief. The believer’s salvation is secure in Christ but can be abandoned by willful choice. (See the Assemblies of God position paper on this topic.)
