The 10 commandments - revisted

It wasn't that long ago that the 10 commandments were everywhere. On courthouse walls.
Hanging on the wall of the Whitehouse. Hanging on the wall of the US Supreme court.
When I was in elementary school we had a plaque hanging on the wall with them.
But it seems like, for whatever reason, the 10 commandments have fallen out of favor with men and
have disappeared.

The 10 commandments were originally written by God. ( Exod 24:12; Exod 32:16; ) Not once, but twice.
The first time was in Exodus 31, but in Exodus 32 the people make a golden calf and Moses
breaks the original stone tablets. ( Exod 32:19; Deut 9:17; )

So in Exod 34, God has Moses make some stone tablets, and God writes the commandments again.
( Exod 34:28; )

So then, what happened to these stone tablets? They were placed into something called the "Ark of the Covenant"
( Exod 25:16; Exod 40:20; ) There could easily be a whole thread about the Ark of the Covenant, but that
is another subject. Iw will say there is an Ark of the Covenant still in Heaven today ( Rev 11:19; )

There are actually somewhere between 310 and 616 laws given in the first five Books of the Bible, mostly in
Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy. The reason the actual number is vague, is because some people say some
of these laws are duplicates worded slightly differently.

So then... what are the 10 commandments?

Exod 20:3; "You shall have no other gods before Me.
Exod 20:4; "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
Exod 20:5; "You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
Exod 20:6; but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
Exod 20:7; "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
Exod 20:8; "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exod 20:9; "Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
Exod 20:10; but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.
Exod 20:11; "For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
Exod 20:12; "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you.
Exod 20:13; "You shall not murder.
Exod 20:14; "You shall not commit adultery.
Exod 20:15; "You shall not steal.
Exod 20:16; "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Exod 20:17; "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

There are 14 verses here, but not 14 commandments, in fact verses 3 through 6 are all one commandment.
Verses 8 through 11 are a single commandment as well. So in reality, we only have 8 commandments here. Where do the other 2 come from?

Deut 6:5; "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Lev 19:18; 'You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.
Deut 11:13; "It shall come about, if you listen obediently to my commandments which I am commanding you today, to love the LORD your God and to serve Him with all your heart and all your soul,
Deut 30:6; "Moreover the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live.

Again, four verses here, but only two commandments. (This is part of the whole "some are duplicates" thing ) Interestingly enough, Jesus says these last two are the two greatest commandments. ( Matt 22:36-38; Mark 12:28-31; )

So far all of the verses given in the previous post are from the Old Testament. In fact, they are from
the first 5 books of the Bible. Are they mentioned in the New testament at all?

Matt 5:21; "You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.'
Matt 19:18; Then he *said to Him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER; YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY; YOU SHALL NOT STEAL; YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS;
Mark 10:19; "You know the commandments, 'DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, Do not defraud, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'"
Luke 18:20; "You know the commandments, 'DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'"
Rom 13:9; For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET," and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."
Jas 2:11; For He who said, "DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY," also said, "DO NOT COMMIT MURDER." Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

Matt 5:27; "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY';
Eph 4:28; He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need.

Matt 15:4; "For God said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,' and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.'
Matt 19:19; HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."
Mark 7:10; "For Moses said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER'; and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH';
Eph 6:2; HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise),

Matt 22:37; And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'
Mark 12:30; AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'
Luke 10:27; And he answered, "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."

All of them are mentioned by Jesus and the Apostles except for one. Keeping the Sabbath. It is mentioned by the Pharisees.
But that also is another subject.

You could say the 10 commandments, were reduced down to just two in the New Testament. Both Jesus and Paul say something to
this effect.

Matt 22:37; And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'
Matt 22:38; "This is the great and foremost commandment.
Matt 22:39; "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'
Matt 22:40; "On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."

Jesus says the whole Law comes down to these two commandments.

Rom 13:8; Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.
Rom 13:9; For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET," and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."
Rom 13:10; Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Paul says loving your neighbor is fulfilling the Law. This could be turned around to say, if you're committing
adultery with your neighbors wife, murdering them, stealing from them, or coveting them... then you aren't loving them.

But wait a minute, doesn't the New Testament say we aren't under the Law anymore?

Rom 6:14; For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Gal 3:10; For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT ABIDE BY ALL THINGS WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF THE LAW, TO PERFORM THEM."
Gal 5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.
Rom 3:20; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
Rom 3:21; But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
Gal 2:21; "I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly."

Well then, it seems all of these verses say we aren't under the Law anymore.... or do they?

Matt 5:19; "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Matt 19:17; And He said to him, "Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."
Matt 22:40; "On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."
Mark 10:19; "You know the commandments, 'DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, Do not defraud, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'"
Luke 18:20; "You know the commandments, 'DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'"
John 14:15; "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
John 14:21; "He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him."
John 15:10; "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.
1Cor 7:19; Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is the keeping of the commandments of God.
1Thes 4:2; For you know what commandments we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
1Jn 2:3; By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.
1Jn 2:4; The one who says, "I have come to know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;
1Jn 3:22; and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.
1Jn 3:24; The one who keeps His commandments abides in Christ, and Christ abides in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
1Jn 5:2; By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.
1Jn 5:3; For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.
2Jn 1:6; And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.
Rev 12:17; So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.
Rev 14:12; Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.

.. and yet we are told over a dozen times in the New Testament to keep the commandments by Jesus, Paul and John.
So then is the Bible contradicting itself?

Some Christians like to call obeying the commandments a work. But no where in the Bible is obeying the commandments called a "work".

In fact the Bible says the obeying the commandments are not a work at all.

1Jn 5:3; For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.

Some people say we aren't under the Old Testament anymore, but then they quote verses like ...

Isa 64:6; But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away

.. which of course is Old Testament.

The Bible does mention "works of the Law".

Rom 3:20; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
Rom 3:27; Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith.
Rom 3:28; For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.
Gal 2:16; nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.
Gal 3:2; This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?
Gal 3:5; So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?
Gal 3:10; For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT ABIDE BY ALL THINGS WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF THE LAW, TO PERFORM THEM."

What are works of the law? Obeying the commandments? Let us dig a little deeper here. Romans and Galatians are the two books
in the Bible that talk about being under Grace not under the Law, they are also the two books that say we aren't saved by "works of the Law".
Further Galatians says if we are led by the Spirit, we aren't under the Law.

Rom 2:25; For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
Rom 2:26; So if the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?
Rom 2:27; And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law?
Rom 2:28; For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh.
Rom 2:29; But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.
Rom 3:1; Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?
Rom 4:11; and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them,
Rom 4:12; and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.
Rom 15:8; For I say that Christ has become a servant to the circumcision on behalf of the truth of God to confirm the promises given to the fathers,
Gal 2:12; For prior to the coming of certain men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision.
Gal 5:2; Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you.
Gal 5:3; And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law.
Gal 5:6; For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love.
Gal 5:11; But I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? Then the stumbling block of the cross has been abolished.
Gal 6:15; For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.
Rom 3:30; since indeed God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith is one.
Rom 4:9; Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, "FAITH WAS CREDITED TO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS."
Rom 4:10; How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised;
Rom 4:11; and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them,
1Cor 7:18; Was any man called when he was already circumcised? He is not to become uncircumcised. Has anyone been called in uncircumcision? He is not to be circumcised.
Gal 2:3; But not even Titus, who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.
Gal 2:7; But on the contrary, seeing that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised
Gal 2:8; (for He who effectually worked for Peter in his apostleship to the circumcised effectually worked for me also to the Gentiles),
Gal 2:9; and recognizing the grace that had been given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we might go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.
Gal 6:12; Those who desire to make a good showing in the flesh try to compel you to be circumcised, simply so that they will not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.
Gal 6:13; For those who are circumcised do not even keep the Law themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised so that they may boast in your flesh.

Here we have over two dozen verses talking about "circumcision". Galatians could be summarized in Gal 6:12-13; Circumcision is a work of the flesh. You do something to your flesh, to your body in
order to please God and be saved. This is the law that we aren't under anymore. This is the work of the flesh that isn't required. This is the part of the law that can't save you. Many males are circumcised when they are newborn infants. They had no choice in the matter. You can be forgiven for this.

Paul himself was circumcised ( Php 3:5; ) He separates the law from the commandments.

1Cor 7:19; Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is the keeping of the commandments of God.
Gal 5:6; For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love.

Faith working through love. What are the commandments? Love God and Love your neighbor.

Matt 19:16; And someone came to Him and said, "Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?"
Matt 19:17; And He said to him, "Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."
Matt 19:18; Then he *said to Him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER; YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY; YOU SHALL NOT STEAL; YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS;
Matt 19:19; HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."

If you wish to enter life... keep the commandments. Now I'm not saying you have to keep them perfectly. But we need to try.
What did Jesus mean by "If you wish to enter into life"? The man was already "alive". He was standing there talking to Jesus, obviously he was alive.
People who don't obey the commandments are "alive" in a sense.

The mans original question was... "How do I obtain eternal life?" Eternal. Non-ending, life forever.

Some people are "half-gospel" or "half-Bible" believers. For example, they believe verses like...

John 6:47; "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.

.., and say that's it, that's all I have to do. I'm done. But they ignore the other 20 verses in the New testament that say we need to keep the commandments.

A lot changed between the old Testament law and the New testament.

Of course the biggest thing that changed was the sacrifice of Jesus, the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.
In the old testament, everytime you sinned you had to go to a priest, confess, and have them sacrifice an animal. Sinning was an expensive
habit. The animals couldn't just be any animal, they had to be perfect, without blemish, not aged, not sick, without spots, no broken bones,
and not deformed.

The phrase "sin offering" is in the Bible over 120 times. I won't post "all" the verses here, but I am posting quite a few here to make a point.

Exod 29:36 "Each day you shall offer a bull as a sin offering for atonement, and you shall purify the altar when you make atonement for it, and you shall anoint it to consecrate it.
Lev 4:3 if the anointed priest sins so as to bring guilt on the people, then let him offer to the LORD a bull without defect as a sin offering for the sin he has committed.
Lev 4:8 'He shall remove from it all the fat of the bull of the sin offering: the fat that covers the entrails, and all the fat which is on the entrails,
Lev 4:14 when the sin which they have committed becomes known, then the assembly shall offer a bull of the herd for a sin offering and bring it before the tent of meeting.
Lev 4:20 'He shall also do with the bull just as he did with the bull of the sin offering; thus he shall do with it. So the priest shall make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven.
Lev 4:23 if his sin which he has committed is made known to him, he shall bring for his offering a goat, a male without defect.
Lev 4:24 'He shall lay his hand on the head of the male goat and slay it in the place where they slay the burnt offering before the LORD; it is a sin offering.
Lev 4:25 'Then the priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering; and the rest of its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering.
Lev 4:28 if his sin which he has committed is made known to him, then he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without defect, for his sin which he has committed.
Lev 4:32 'But if he brings a lamb as his offering for a sin offering, he shall bring it, a female without defect.
Lev 4:33 'He shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and slay it for a sin offering in the place where they slay the burnt offering.
Lev 4:34 'The priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and all the rest of its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar.
Lev 5:6 'He shall also bring his guilt offering to the LORD for his sin which he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat as a sin offering. So the priest shall make atonement on his behalf for his sin.
Lev 5:7 'But if he cannot afford a lamb, then he shall bring to the LORD his guilt offering for that in which he has sinned, two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering.
Lev 5:8 'He shall bring them to the priest, who shall offer first that which is for the sin offering and shall nip its head at the front of its neck, but he shall not sever it.
Lev 5:9 'He shall also sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering on the side of the altar, while the rest of the blood shall be drained out at the base of the altar: it is a sin offering.
Lev 5:10 'The second he shall then prepare as a burnt offering according to the ordinance. So the priest shall make atonement on his behalf for his sin which he has committed, and it will be forgiven him.
Lev 5:11 'But if his means are insufficient for two turtledoves or two young pigeons, then for his offering for that which he has sinned, he shall bring the tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering; he shall not put oil on it or place incense on it, for it is a sin offering.
Lev 5:12 'He shall bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take his handful of it as its memorial portion and offer it up in smoke on the altar, with the offerings of the LORD by fire: it is a sin offering.
Lev 5:13 'So the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin which he has committed from one of these, and it will be forgiven him; then the rest shall become the priest's, like the grain offering.'"
Lev 6:17 'It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their share from My offerings by fire; it is most holy, like the sin offering and the guilt offering.
Lev 6:25 "Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, 'This is the law of the sin offering: in the place where the burnt offering is slain the sin offering shall be slain before the LORD; it is most holy.
Lev 6:30 'But no sin offering of which any of the blood is brought into the tent of meeting to make atonement in the holy place shall be eaten; it shall be burned with fire.
Lev 7:7 'The guilt offering is like the sin offering, there is one law for them; the priest who makes atonement with it shall have it.
Lev 7:37 This is the law of the burnt offering, the grain offering and the sin offering and the guilt offering and the ordination offering and the sacrifice of peace offerings,
Lev 8:2 "Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments and the anointing oil and the bull of the sin offering, and the two rams and the basket of unleavened bread,
Lev 8:14 Then he brought the bull of the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull of the sin offering.
Lev 9:2 and he said to Aaron, "Take for yourself a calf, a bull, for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering, both without defect, and offer them before the LORD.
Lev 9:3 "Then to the sons of Israel you shall speak, saying, 'Take a male goat for a sin offering, and a calf and a lamb, both one year old, without defect, for a burnt offering,

In the old testament you had to go to priests to do this sacrifice. If you did a small sin you could sacrifice a dove or something small.
Medium sins required a goat or lamb. Large sins required a bull or something large. Jewish tradition says it had to be done by a priest
because you couldn't be trusted to pick the correct sacrifice yourself, you might try to cheat God and sacrifice something smaller.

But in the New Covenant, we don't have earthly priests anymore. Jesus is our priest. The is one of the heresies of the Roman Catholic church.

Heb 3:1; Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession;
Heb 4:14; Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
Heb 4:15; For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
Heb 5:1; For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God, in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins;
Heb 5:5; So also Christ did not glorify Himself so as to become a high priest, but He who said to Him, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU";
Heb 5:6; just as He says also in another passage, "YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK."
Heb 5:10; being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
Heb 6:20; where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

Besides why would you want an earthly priest if you could have Jesus?

Heb 7:22; so much the more also Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.
Heb 7:23; The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing,
Heb 7:24; but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently.

Heb 7:26; For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens;

Heb 7:28; For the Law appoints men as high priests who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints a Son, made perfect forever.

The earthly priests had weaknesses. But Jesus is perfect.

So this is a very long post, I usually try to avoid posts this long because nobody reads all the verses anyway. What does all this have to do with
the 10 commandments? Only this, some people try to use the excuse that we aren't under the law anymore in order to sin all they want to.
All these verses above about sacrificing animals and priests.. they are the law we aren't under anymore. We still have to keep the commandments.

This is one of my favorite verses.

Rom 8:1; Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

But this is one of those verses people like to quote only half of. They like the part
about there is no condemnation. But they leave out the part about being "in Christ Jesus".

Well I'm in Christ Jesus right? How do you know? The Bible tells us how we can know.

1Jn 3:24; The one who keeps His commandments abides in Christ, and Christ abides in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

Christ's people associate with God by means of a new covenant wherein there are

That lends itself some opportunities to do as one pleases; but his followers are
urged to avoid going down that road.

• Rom 6:1-2 . .Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more
and more kindness and forgiveness? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how
can we continue to live in it?

• Gal 5:13 . .You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom
to indulge the sinful nature.

NOTE: "died to sin" was accomplished when Jesus was executed. (Rom 6:3-11, Gal
2:20, and Col 3:2-3)

Some Christians like to call obeying the commandments a work. But no where in the Bible is obeying the commandments called a "work".

In fact the Bible says the obeying the commandments are not a work at all.

"Work" in the biblical context is also called "costumary work", that's what you regularly do in the other six days besides the Sabbath, usually for pay, you can check out that definition from Lev. 23, the chapter about the Feasts of the Lord. This definition is simple yet also complex, because it varies from person to person, as we all have different jobs, and that's a good thing, as we're endowed with different talents, what's common is the Sabbath gathering, hence the 4th commandment. Therefore this is the folly of the pharisees. You can't pin it down on certain activities, giving permission to do this and not to do that.

Also, I wanna point out that the false dichotomy of "sacred" and "secular" which has made modern Christianity a joke. If you believe that God gets His work done through His people, do you think it's done within the four walls of the church buildings on that one day - or out in the field in the other six days of work? I don't know about you, but in the church I attend, we don't just teach the bible and preach the gospel, we share testimony of God's mighty work in this dark, terrible time, and guess what, all these work was done in other six days - as God created the universe in six days! Sunday gathering is more or less a job report, the "secular" activities that you do matter to God as much as the Sabbath, if not more.

And scripture teaches us that not all such persons are thrown into the lake of fire.

As I read my thoughts went to Romans 10:4 (above), and looking back to verses one & two, Paul is expressing his heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel. It was that they might be saved. For they were ignorant of God's righteousness, and were going about to establish their own righteousness, and not submitting themselves unto the righteousness of God.

Now anyone who has come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour, through faith in the all-sufficient sacrifice for sin that was made by Christ on the cross, will not be looking to the ten commandments as a means of salvation: Or of attaining unto righteousness; will they? For the righteousness of God has already been imputed unto them: and this is not what you are advocating either, are you? NO! If I am correct, what you are saying is that the ten commandments should be the measure by which we measure our life and witness once saved. They should be incorporated into our manner of life, in order to live a life which is honouring to the Lord in loving our neighbour as ourselves, but NOT as a means of attaining unto righteousness, Is this so?

Here’s the huge misunderstanding. Either the Ten Commandments or the Great commandment is not just laws to observe or rules to follow, but bonds that maintain a loving, healthy relationship. “Love the Lord our God” is a vertical relationship between you and God, “live your neighbor as yourself” is a horizontal relationship between you and other people. A “commandment” is between master and servant, the bond in a relationship is much more than that, you put the other’s feelings and needs before your own, that’s why under the new covenant, the Ten Commandments are not written in the stones, but in our hearts, see Jeremiah 31:31-34. It’s never about behavior modification as a lot of people think. The word “Torah”, actually, means TEACHING and INSTRUCTION before law and rules.
