Greetings Brother,
yes, it is often overlooked. Much was/is concerning 'getting right with God' by keeping the whole Law, which included the doing required by the person concerned.
This overflows to the more 'general' practices that only certain priests could do on behalf of the people, which is also why the New Testament [and i think we;ll find in the Old Testament also] speaks of those things being of none effect now, so the keeping of them, the looking to them to help or the dependence upon them, etc is of no benefit = on the contrary, regarding the Faith of Christ, it is contrary and what was used to try to persuade 'Christians' away from the faith they had received and the Hope they held on to.
Thank you for bring this up.
What we do have now is found throughout the Bible.
One thought we could perhaps remember is that it is by their fruit, not by their leaves!
Now at the same time there are a number of places we can find mention of some sort of ;works; or another, that speak of actions and reactions of either an individual or a group/congregation, for example:
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
Galatians 5:16-24
I think you'll find that B-A-C @B-A-C has been wanting to bring our attention to the need to do that which a branch must do to remain grafted in
And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: for if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in His goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again. For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?
Romans 11:17-24
Bless you ....><>
In almost every case, when the New Testament speaks of 'works' negatively, it has in mind either circumcision or Jewish food laws. Bearing this in mind can help you avoid getting in a mess about works/grace.
