What Does the 2nd Amendment Actually Say?

According to the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed ."

Note the purpose of "Arms" ownership is to have a well-regulated militia for protection, rather than a closet filled with assault weapons just because we feel like it. And unlike at the end of the Revolutionary War, today we have police, a national guard, army, navy and more, which overwhelmingly qualify as a "well-regulated militia".

When the 2nd Amendment was drafted, there were no large urban populations or citizens gravely endangered by modern mega-multiple-repeating weapons. And, who knows what horrific "Arms" may be contained in a future brief case or even smaller space?

The word "Arms" is deliberately capitalized, a common practice at the time used for emphasis. Since Thomas Jefferson and many other early Americans owned private cannons, the largest weapon available to them, "Arms" to the framers clearly meant more than just small arms one can easily "bear".

In the 18th Century, the right to "keep" and bear arms allowed many estates, farms and ships to proudly display private cannons. This is entirely ignored by the NRA, which focuses on private gun and small weapons ownership, which are obviously only part of modern "Arms".

The word "gun" is found nowhere in the Constitution, a carefully crafted document. According to the preamble, one of the main purposes of government is to "insure domestic Tranquility" (also capitalized). To correctly interpret the intentions of the framers, everything following the preamble, including the ten original amendments, must be weighed in light of the Constitution's stated purpose, which among other things is to secure the peace within the U.S.

The 2nd Amendment clearly says "Arms", not guns. To insist it permits unlimited ownership of mass murdering military-style weapons, is no more Constitutionally rational than to claim it allows for unlimited private ownership of bombs, chemical weapons and space-ray machines; all modern "Arms" unknown to the American founders.

If we wish to have a society at all, then the 21st Century question is not "if" we are going to restrict private "Arms" ownership but rather, in what manner are we going to restrict Arms. And if anyone has a right to regulate the 2nd Amendment, it is the families and survivors of far too many mass shootings. Our politicians and courts have gravely failed to protect us.

As America's founders wisely allowed for, we can always amend what the Constitution says. A perhaps better and much quicker idea would be to amend the NRA out of existence, by convincing a reluctant media to point out its highly deceptive and historically irrational position. It is irrational today to pretend we can live in a free society without regulating "Arms".

Neither the media or the NRA has any Constitutional or other right to limit the 2nd Amendment to a debate over guns, nor to otherwise ignore the intentions of America's founders clearly stated in the preamble: To "insure domestic Tranquility". For a Constitutional interpretation to be correct, it must fall within this clearly stated purpose.

Are politicians, the courts and the American media really being honest and fair in regards to what the 2nd Amendment and the rest of the Constitution actually says? Is it being honest to pretend that James Madison, Thomas Jefferson and the rest of the American founders really intended for AR-15 military-style weapons to be owned and freely carried around in public? You decide, before your child becomes the next victim of an easily preventable mass shooting.

You can become a victim of the Satanic invasion all you want, but you should not. I will nuke you if I have to hahaha. But the parasitic army of the Anti-Christ do not care about anyone's opinion. Especially yours.

Thank God these indoctrinated cultists and demonically possessed people have a chance to be healed by the Healing Might of Christ. #FastAndPray

Is this person suggesting guns are not "arms" nor did our awesome Founding Fathers not list them b/c they knew that level of stupidity should not exist?
America's FREEDOM and from Britain is because of GUNS.

Always the same WEAK argument.
Richard is NOT a Constitutional expert.
He is not conservative. Consevative beliefs more align with God than Leftoid, unborn baby murder, LGB+, open borders, and communism among other things.

Every nation in Europe experiences two mass shootings or less annually, many less than one. The United States experiences over 400 mass shootings annually and some years over 500. Are Americans worse murderers or is there some obvious other reason, that mass repeating weapons are not allowed in Europe???

So, you think it is "satanic" to not be willing to sacrifice our children to mass shootings???

SO?
Claim? Your statement is not evidence.
Hearts and people without God are the problem.
Fact: Blacks commit MORE crime than all other ethnic groups combined and worse on each other.
That is historical AND statistical fact.

You want to know what a government will do once it takes away guns?
ANYTHING it wants.
Look at Britain. Make "mean" post on Facebook or whatever even if it's TRUE?
Good, law abiding gun owners who are the high majority do NOT commit crimes with or without guns.

Seems like you are a racist. Shame on you. People in Europe do not have AR-15's and they are far better off; far less murder and mass shootings. Your ignorance is astounding.

Ah, the old Leftard can't argue so "racist".
It's called pattern recognition and the DOJ alone has so much evidence you might learn a thing or two.
It is a fact.
The non-White "migrants" who are flooding Europe are making it worse.
If anyone on this site is ignorant,it is you.

Murder & Non-negligent Manslaughter: ~51.3% Black or African American
Proportionately, they DO more crime.

When I went to Switzerland years ago everyone did mandatory military service. They were allowed to keep their military weapon afterwards. There were practically no mass shootings despite huge numbers of military grade guns in public hands.

Black people are targeted by racist police and arrested far more often than White people, for the same things that White people do, not because they commit more crime. The vast majority of death row inmates who have later been found innocent through DNA testing, are Black. In fact, it is rare that a White person is found innocent, even though Black people are only 12 percent of the population. This is because police, courts, judges and juries are prejudiced against Black people.

Immigrants do the work that Americans are unwilling to do, including farm labor, construction labor, hospitality jobs, dishwashing and bussing, meat and poultry processing factories, etc. Your hatred for immigrants is unwarranted and is as immoral as the day is long.

God's answer to racism:
"After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands and crying out with a loud voice, saying, 'Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the lamb!'" --Revelation 7

“I was a stranger and you took me in” Matthew 25 –Jesus

“Cursed is the one who perverts the justice due the stranger, the fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say, ‘Amen!” Deuteronomy 19:10

“I will be a swift witness
Against sorcerers,
Against adulterers,
Against perjurers,
Against those who exploit wage earners and widows and orphans,
And against those who turn away an alien—
Because they do not fear me,
Says the Lord of hosts.” --Malachi 3:6

“Execute true justice,
Show mercy and compassion
Everyone to his brother.
Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless,
The alien or the poor.
Let none of you plan evil in his heart
Against his brother.” --Zecharia 7:10, thus says the Lord

“But let justice run down like water,
And righteousness like a mighty stream – Amos 5:24, thus says the Lord

"Black people are targeted by racist police". Evidence? You give none.
As the Leftoid you are, you're cherry picking the Bible.
For one, NO person can ever see any ethnic group or the world as God can. If you claim to be, you're lying.
Everyone note this person leaves out "illegal aliens".

1. Obeying the laws of the land

Romans 13:1–2
“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities…”
Titus 3:1
“Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good.”
1 Peter 2:13–14
“Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority…”
Peter specifically includes governing authorities whose purpose is to punish those who do wrong and commend those who do right.

Illegals are here ILLEGALLY, which you've shown you do not understand.
Go to Mexico or Russia illegaly and by just laws you should be arrested and put in prison among other punishments.

2. Laws and borders between nations

The Bible explicitly speaks of God establishing the boundaries of peoples and nations.
Deuteronomy 32:8
“When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided all mankind, he set up boundaries for the peoples…”
This is one of the clearest passages concerning national boundaries.
Acts 17:26
“From one man he made all the nations… and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.”
Paul presents the existence and geographic boundaries of nations as something within God's sovereignty.
Deuteronomy 19:14
“Do not move your neighbor’s boundary stone set up by your predecessors…”
Proverbs 22:28
“Do not move an ancient boundary stone set up by your ancestors.”
These originally concern property boundaries, but they demonstrate a broader biblical principle: God recognizes legitimate boundaries and condemns unlawfully taking what belongs to another.

3. Walls around cities

Walls were extremely normal—and legitimate—in the biblical world.
Nehemiah 2:17
“Come, let us rebuild Jerusalem’s wall, and we will no longer be in disgrace.”
Jerusalem's wall was rebuilt specifically for protection and security.
Nehemiah 4:13–14
The people stationed families with swords, spears, and bows along the wall because they were facing hostile enemies.
Nehemiah 4:17–18
“Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other…”

The Bible therefore doesn't portray defensive walls as inherently wrong. Quite the opposite: protecting a population from hostile attackers was considered legitimate.

4. Gates and controlled entry

Biblical cities didn't merely have walls—they had gates, which controlled access.
Nehemiah 7:3
“The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot…”
The gates were deliberately controlled.
Nehemiah 13:19
Nehemiah ordered the city gates to be shut before the Sabbath and guarded so merchants wouldn't enter Jerusalem and conduct commerce.

This is particularly interesting because it shows a government/city authority controlling who could enter and what could take place inside the city.

5. Israel was commanded to protect its territory

Israel's territorial boundaries were repeatedly defined by God.
For example:
Numbers 34:1–12
God gives Israel specific territorial boundaries.
Deuteronomy 2:4–5
Israel was told not to seize the territory belonging to the descendants of Esau.
Deuteronomy 2:19
Likewise, Israel was prohibited from taking the territory belonging to the Ammonites.
This is significant: even though Israel was God's chosen nation, God recognized that other peoples had lands that Israel was not automatically entitled to take.

6. Foreigners living among Israel

There's an important balance here.
The Old Testament repeatedly commands Israel to treat foreigners justly.
Leviticus 19:33–34
“When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born.”
Deuteronomy 10:18–19
“He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you…”
So biblical teaching isn't simply:
“Foreigners are bad.”
Rather, Scripture simultaneously teaches:

  • nations have boundaries;
  • governments have authority;
  • cities can defend themselves;
  • laws should be obeyed;
  • property shouldn't be unlawfully taken;
  • foreigners should be treated fairly;
  • and God's people should not commit injustice against outsiders.

7. A particularly interesting passage: the city gate

The city gate was more than an entrance. It was a place of government, courts, commerce, and public authority.
For example:
Deuteronomy 21:19
“His parents shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town.”
Ruth 4:1–2
Boaz goes to the city gate and conducts a legal proceeding before the elders.

Proverbs 31:23
“Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.”
So the biblical picture of a functioning community includes defined territory + gates + authorities + laws + courts + protection.

LOL, if there are only two killings a year by guns, how many killings a year are there by vehicles? Therefore we should Outlaw the vehicles because there are more killings by Vehicles than there are with guns.

And don't forget we should also outlaw knives pencils and other objects that do killings too probably more so than your claim of how many people are killed by guns. So why are the guns the bad guys if there's only two people a year?

Yes I think knives, sticks, pencils, and especially automobiles should be outlawed. And don't forget lightning there's at least two people or more that get killed by lightning so we need to outlaw lightning as well

It isn't the guns that caused the murders, it's the people who use them. Maybe we should bring back insane asylums for all the whack jobs that are out there.

The left are the ones who disdain insane asylums, maybe it's because so many of them were in there in the first place

The Bible clearly states that "we ought to obey God, rather than people" and, the early followers of Jesus did just that, disobeying Roman laws when they conflicted with God. You are ignoring this to your own destruction.

May Jesus fill us with his love and wisdom.

Are you sure that obeying God's law is being complacent? Our God is love that is true. But true love also has discipline. As a father, if I truly love my children I must discipline them as well.
