I'm also a licensed clinical social worker, although I currently work as a therapist,
I've worked in the past as a supervisor at the department of Social Services in the Intensive Case Management Unit,
I've even worked on some cases with the FBI ( it was related to child sex trafficking )
I've also served as CPS, Child Protective Services Supervisor, where I determined whether
we would screen in or screen out a call related to Maltreatment (child-abuse physical, child abuse sexual, or neglect).

Meaning I did the job after the workers took the call or supervising which cases we said we had enough information
to investigate child abuse and which cases we received calls which did not fit the description of child abuse.

I've also been school based mental health coordinator in my county where I supervised all the therapist
in the school based program in our county and also worked with children from Kindergarten to 12th grade.

I saw this to say I am aware of what my State defines as child abuse and I'm also aware of children's developmental
needs, so watch the video above and it should shine some light on the subject from a perspective of a Christian
who is also a Certified Clinical Social Worker for the last 17 years.

One argument that some make against spanking is that if you use physical violence to discipline your child, you are teaching them to be violent.

I don't buy that argument.

Yes, some children don't respond well to spanking, however generally speaking, the logic behind that argument is flawed for several reasons.


The primary reason is that it assumes that the parent and the child are on the same level, and they are not.
Children learn to respect authority in the home, and they should learn that there are privileges grants to authority.

For example, as a citizen I am not suppose to use force to deal with a situation, but a police officer, who is the authority
is authorized to use force. It is ok for police to use force to correct the misbehavior of a citizen (when done appropriately),
while it is not ok for a citizen to use force.

Similarly, the parent is the authority in the home, and it is ok for them to use force while it is not ok for the child
to use force. This teaches the child at an early age that there is a difference between authority and YOU. The secular
society which has children divorcing their parents, and children getting birth control without parents permission,
are putting children on the same level as parents, and that is not how it should be.

When a child is under age, they can't drink alcohol or drive a car, but their parents can.
When you spank your child, and done the right way, it does not teach them that violence is ok.
It teaches them that violence is an appropriate way for authority to punish them. And when
a child learns that the authority has the legitimate right to punish them, there is more of a respect
for authority and law enforcement.

However, when children don't learn this early through spanking, they often grown up feeling a sense of privilege
and feel like the police have no right to touch them, or that they don't have to follow the rules of the government,
or just other privileged behaviors because they never learned that there is a difference between them and authority.
Not that those in a position of authority are better than them, but the office has responsibilities and privileges afforded
to it for the benefit of society. Whether that is the office of being a teacher, officer of being a parent, or office of being
a police officer.

God knew what He was saying when He give us this instruction, but sometimes in our psychology and sociology and
our earthly knowledge, we get too "smart" for ourselves because our insights lead out the WORD of God.

FYI, I took the Social Work path to be a therapist opposed to psychiatry, psychology, or counseling.

Because:
Psychologist mostly deal with psychology testing, that's their specialty and their counseling is more just focused on the mind.
Psychiatrist are medal doctors who try to fix the problem with medications mostly,
Licensed Counselors do therapy as well and they often specialize in addictions(drugs counseling),

Clinical Social Workers such as myself, also do therapy and can diagnose with mental disorders, but we also focus on a holistic picture,
which includes advocacy, linking clients to resources, spirituality, the community, and the person in the environment.

Which for example is why a client with depression may come to a psychologist and the psychologist tells them about their irrational
cognitive distortions, etc and give them some therapeutic home work. The clinical social worker will do that as well (maybe not as in depth),
but I would also look at the environment (community) and link my client to resource, such as, "Hey there is a YMCA program in your community which I think will help you get out
of the house and assist with your depression", Or I might advocate for my client and write a letter to some agency in the community
on my client's behalf, whereas you rarely see the other professions advocating on that level like social workers do.


I used this analogy before, imagine your car is driving bad and you take it to the mechanic.

In this analogy,

Mechanic A (represents the psychologist)
They hook up your car to a diagnostic testing machine and run the codes and
give you a print out of what is wrong. They tell you that the diagnostics show that your
wheel alignment is off and it pulls to the left.

Mechanic B (represents the psychiatrist)
They take your car and inspect the parts and notice that your tire has worn tread,
on the left, they don't tell you that your alignment is off (like Mechanic A) but they suggest
buying new tires. Over time the new tires that you buy will wear out again, and they will
again give you new tires (pills addressing parts(organs/body) to address your driving problem.

Mechanic C (represent my profession, clinical social work)
Such a mechanic would look at the person in the environment, and notice that your driving
habits tend to have you make sharp left turns (which is what is leading to the tire wear
as well as the alignment) and such a mechanic would get you to focus on changing the
way you drive to solve the problem by empowering you to take control of your situation and
your environment.

I was disciplined with a belt, never abused.

I received the belt on my hand (palm).
Usually maybe 5 times, never really left a mark, although it was painful.

Belt was a leather belt, don't remember any metal tips, but yes it hurt.

It did a good job of driving the foolishness out of me as a child.

Kids are innately disobedient. Kids will learn what the limits are. If all a parent does is get loud but never hits they learn to deal with being yelled at. They know no matter how bad they are punishment will never go beyond yelling and some weak punishment.
Spankings should be rare but effective, IMO. A belt is one thing but again a switch from the right kind of plant should correct most children.

Each child has their own bend, and respond different.

I was the child that I only needed to be spanked like once on a certain topic and I learned my lesson.
Spanking was rare with me because when it did happen, I learned quickly. Other's need
more frequent spankings to correct the behaviors, and others benefit better from words
or loss of privileges.

Many children obey their parents for reasons and if they get one it's rare.
Given how most children are the variables that affect them are too numerous.
I've stated where the line is.
