Well thank you, but I'm deadly serious. As I said, idiom is a translator's nightmare.
But an accurate Dynamic Equivalent rendering
should read
And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a pain in the neck, (or - "a thorn in my side" is just as good) ... a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
(2 Corinthians 12:7 KJV)
And that messenger of Satan would be those pesky Judaizers who followed Paul around to preach what he would consider a message of Satan. And Paul wanted them GONE. This is why God replied to Paul that his grace was sufficient (to keep those believers true to Paul's gospel.) Consider, though, that since the word messenger is singular, Paul might have actually meant James ...
But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision. (Galatians 2:11-12 KJV)
God bless,
